New exercise program for seniors in Chemnitz is starting soon!

From April 30, 2025, the TU Chemnitz offers a motor-cognitive exercise program for Chemnitz residents aged 65 and over. This innovative program, known as “MoKo-Fit,” aims to promote overall health and independence among older people. The courses take place twice a week outside. Prof. Dr. Torsten Schlesinger leads the project, which has already launched twelve movement groups since 2022.

The special thing about “MoKo-Fit” is the combination of motor and cognitive exercises that aim to improve both the physical and mental performance of the participants. Interested people can register with Katharina Zwingmann and benefit from free participation. The groups will meet in a green area on the Reichenhainer Straße campus, with alternative rooms available in case of bad weather.

Structure of the program

The courses take place on Wednesdays and Fridays: Group 1 starts at 9:30 a.m., followed by Group 2 at 10:30 a.m. During the program, participants also undergo physical and mental measurements before and after the sessions to record progress. After the course, some participants will be trained as movement mentors in order to pass on what they have learned in the future.

In addition, another “MoKo-Fit” offer will be launched in various parts of Chemnitz from September 2025. Free, age-appropriate groups take place in various areas of the city, which are also under the professional guidance of licensed exercise instructors. These groups also start outdoors and are intended to help sustainably improve the quality of life of the older population.

That from Federal Ministry of Health RKI-supported health monitoring finds that older people need targeted health promotion measures in order to grow older healthily and actively. The ongoing “Health 65+” study focuses on current topics that are often not taken into account in other data sets and offers valuable insights into the health situation of this age group.

Common goal

The “MoKo-Fit” project in Chemnitz, which is embedded in the ongoing health studies, pursues a clear goal: to strengthen the physical and mental fitness of the participants and to enable them to lead a self-determined lifestyle. The feedback so far on the effectiveness of the exercise groups is promising. Scientific monitoring of the project has already identified improvements in the mobility and mental performance of the participants.

As part of the program, particular emphasis is placed on the social aspect of the movement; Participants often continue with the groups after completing the program. This social exchange is important not only for the physical but also for the mental well-being of older people, who often suffer from loneliness.
