New basic education center in Saxony: opportunities for those with low levels of literacy!

The promotion of literacy and basic education in Saxony is receiving new impetus through the support of Chemnitz University of Technology. The Professorship for Adult Education and Continuing Education began its activities in January 2025 to support the seven regional basic education centers (GBZ) in the Free State. These centers, which started their work in 2024, offer a wide range of learning and consulting formats to specifically address the literacy and basic education needs of the population.

The GBZ focus in particular on the needs of around 400,000 poorly literate people in Saxony as well as another group of 400,000 people of working age who also need basic education. In order to effectively reach the different target groups, the GBZ develop didactic concepts that rely on low-threshold access and promote systematic networking within the regions. According to the report from Chemnitz University of Technology, the centers offer various formats, including advisory opportunities and both open and closed learning opportunities.

Diverse offers

The GBZ's offerings cover important topics such as literacy, basic digital education and work-oriented training programs, but also health and political education. This versatility helps to comprehensively cover the basic education needs of the Saxon population. The scientific support provided by Chemnitz University of Technology aims to optimize the development and expansion of the GBZ and its networks, which should ensure more equal opportunities in the region.

The “Scientific Support of Regional Basic Education Centers (GruBiZSa)” project will be funded over two and a half years with around 234,000 euros from the European Social Fund (ESF Plus) and will also receive financial support from the Free State of Saxony. This initiative represents an important step towards improving educational opportunities for the affected groups of people.

The context of basic education in Saxony

The situation in Saxony is not unique, but reflects a nationwide problem. In Germany and especially in the new federal states, a significant part of the population is affected by little or no educational qualifications, which can have a negative impact on many areas of life. The problem of literacy and basic education is therefore not only an individual challenge, but also a social issue that needs to be addressed. These aspects are covered by the Literacy and basic education in Saxony addresses and illustrates the need for GBZ as an integral part of the education system.

The efforts to improve educational opportunities in Saxony are more than just an educational project; they are a fundamental measure to strengthen society and the economy. The initiative corresponds to a broader concern to see education as the key to participation and equal opportunities for all.
