Saxony's research takes off: six projects funded for the future!
On June 16, 2025, Saxon Economics Minister Dirk Panter congratulated the Technical University of Bergakademie Freiberg (TUBAF) on its outstanding performance in the competition for validation projects. All six TUBAF projects submitted were approved in this context. As the TU Freiberg reports, the goal of validation funding is to accelerate the path from research to market readiness and thus contribute to Saxony's economic development.
The validation funding, which has existed since 2021, supports research institutions in Saxony in the practical application of their scientific results. This is done by checking the technical feasibility and economic benefits of the research results.
Diverse projects with innovation potential
The approved TUBAF projects cover various topics and include, among other things:
- Entwicklung mobiler Sensortechnologien zur Überwachung von Georisiken.
- Aufbereitung belasteter Prozessgase mittels Mikrowellenplasma.
- Neuartige Kalibrierkörper für die Wasserstoffanalyse in Metallen.
- Umweltfreundliches Silicium-Ätzverfahren für die Halbleiterindustrie.
Two of these projects have the potential for spin-offs. This includes a system for surface processing of large components using plasma electrolytic polishing as well as the production of metal powders for additive manufacturing from metallic waste and residual products from the electroplating industry.
The implementation of these projects is planned for the period from May 1, 2025 to November 30, 2026. TUBAF is supported by the Central Transfer Office and the SAXEED start-up network, which also offer support beyond the funding period.
Funding conditions and future prospects
The funding comes from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the Free State of Saxony. The funding is for a maximum of 18 months with 90% of the eligible expenses, up to 250,000 euros per project. These funds are intended to bring the projects to fruition quickly and to ensure their economic exploitation.
In addition, a new call for funding was launched on September 28, 2023 to further increase innovative strength in Saxony. In the first selection round, 25 of 45 submitted project outlines were selected, with a project focus on validating promising research results. The period for the funded projects is up to 18 months, with planned completion by the end of November 2025 at the latest.
A more recent analysis of the Saxon transfer system has highlighted strengths and potential for improvement in knowledge and technology transfer. 1,150 companies and numerous scientific institutions took part in this survey. The results emphasize the need to convert research results into marketable products more quickly, as well as the need for strategic collaborations.
The Saxon innovation platform futureSAX GmbH will also be involved in the exploitation planning in order to further strengthen the interface between research and business. Economics Minister Panter emphasizes that it is crucial to use research results more efficiently and to intensify cooperation between companies and science in order to exploit Saxony's innovation potential.
