Steven Richter: Gold rush at the U23 European Championships!

Steven Richter, a 22-year-old economics student at Chemnitz University of Technology, won gold at the U23 European Discus Throwing Championships in Bergen, Norway. With an impressive distance of 64.67 meters, the LV 90 Erzgebirge athlete prevailed against strong competition. These championships took place on July 22, 2025 and marked a high point in Richter's sporting career.

Conditions were challenging with a strong tailwind affecting casts. Despite these adverse circumstances, Richter managed to achieve his winning distance in the third attempt. His teammates, Mika Sosna from TSG Bergedorf and Marius Karges from Eintracht Frankfurt, took second and third place with 63.42 m and 62.20 m. All three German discus throwers exceeded the 60-meter mark, demonstrating their outstanding form.

A historic success

This victory represents Richter's first international podium finish and, so to speak, his greatest sporting success. Previously, he had often stood in the shadow of his pioneering teammates. At the U23 DM in Ulm he had to give way to Mika Sosna in the last attempt. Richter said that the goal of standing together on the podium has now been achieved. He is trained by Sven Lang and Steve Harnapp and already has his eyes on his next challenge: the World University Games in Bochum.

Richter is optimistic and is aiming for a medal there too. He will make the journey via Düsseldorf, even if he has not yet seen the stadium in Bochum. In the future he would like to continue to draw attention to himself on the international stage. In previous competitions, Richter had often lagged behind Sosna and Karges, which makes the significance of this victory even greater.

Support from Chemnitz University of Technology

The Chemnitz University of Technology supports top athletes through flexible study conditions and individual solutions for combining studies and sport. This support is also underpinned by the recognition of Chemnitz University of Technology as a “partner university for top-class sports”. In this environment, Richter was able to optimally prepare for his competitions and ultimately achieve his successes.

The German discus throwers showed an excellent performance at the U23 European Championships in Bergen and shared the medal ranks among themselves. In addition to Richter, Sosna and Karges, who both showed substantial performances in the final, were also in the spotlight. Sosna said that he was not satisfied with his own performance, but recognized Richter's successful team performance. Karges, on the other hand, was happy with his bronze finish despite a bumpy competition.

Through his success, Steven Richter has not only represented himself, but also the German discus scene. His achievements and the support from Chemnitz University of Technology show that high goals and sporting excellence can go hand in hand. The U23 European Championships will now be remembered as a springboard for the next challenges, especially the World University Games.
