Student survey at Chemnitz University of Technology: Exciting results expected!

The most recent survey at Chemnitz University of Technology provided valuable insights into the needs and views of students. According to the results of the TUCpanel survey, which was completed on May 16, 2025, around 1,311 students - approximately 19.8% of the total students - took part in the survey. Participation was particularly high in the faculties of mathematics, natural sciences and human and social sciences, where at least a quarter of the students were actively involved. The Faculty of Human and Social Sciences represented the largest group with 282 participants.

The survey allowed students to provide feedback on various aspects of their study experience, including events, exam formats and overall study organization. Many participants commented positively on the quality of teaching, especially the personal exchange between teachers and students. At the same time, the wish was expressed to publish the examination schedule earlier in order to make it easier to plan learning phases and internships. Artificial intelligence and sustainability are also topics that are already integrated into teaching, and digital teaching formats are seen as helpful in the learning process.

Evaluation and relevance of the survey

The TUCpanel team is currently preparing the detailed analysis of the survey. Results reports are scheduled for mid-June, with the results feeding into the university's ongoing accreditation processes. Notably, 44% of respondents took advantage of the opportunity to provide open-ended answers that provide in-depth insights into individual experiences. The University of Chemnitz thanks the students for their participation and offered participants the chance to take part in a raffle for TU Chemnitz hoodies.

The TUCpanel survey is part of a broader turnaround in research on students in Germany. This area has become increasingly important in recent years, which is made clear by the introduction of the student survey, which combines various long-term surveys. The last comprehensive survey under this initiative took place in 2023, with a total of 188,000 students surveyed to determine students' social and economic conditions. Such data is crucial for higher education education monitoring and the development of reports and scientific publications.

Long-term studies and future surveys

According to information from BMBF, the next student survey is planned for spring 2025. This is not the only measure to gain insight into the reality of students. Long-term studies also indicate that the challenges faced by students, particularly with regard to career prospects after graduation, continue to be a key research topic. The topics of academic success and dropping out have been supported by targeted funding measures from the BMBF since 2016 in order to promote positive developments in these areas.

The relevance of studies on the student situation is also reflected in the results of social surveys and specifically targeted surveys on health impairments. These studies are indispensable in order to comprehensively paint a picture of the reality of student life in Germany.

In summary, it can be said that the results of the TUCpanel survey are not only important for the University of Chemnitz, but also make a valuable contribution to the comprehensive knowledge about the study situation in Germany, which is of central importance for the development of higher education. The continuous improvement of teaching and study conditions remains a central challenge.
