Technology transfer: Research opens doors to industry and innovation!
On March 27, 2025, the Technical University of Bergakademie Freiberg (TUBAF) and the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft will focus on technology transfer, which is of central importance for the connection between research and business. The TUBAF central transfer office provides essential support for researchers who are actively supported throughout the entire transfer process.
The support covers various areas, such as the assessment of transfer potential, market analyzes and support through the entire patent process, starting with the invention disclosure. The exploitation of industry-relevant research results is also one of the core tasks. The transfer office also establishes important contacts with business, administration and politics in order to give researchers access to new cooperation and financing opportunities. An important instrument here is the “Something with Transfer” workshop series, which covers topics such as intellectual property rights, industrial cooperation, negotiation and scientific communication.
Transfer potential and scientific excellence
The Transfer1000 study Fraunhofer Institute clearly shows that technology transfer does not contradict the core academic business. Rather, it creates new cooperation and financing opportunities and strengthens the visibility and recognition of one's own research. This not only opens up new perspectives in the academic world, but also expands your own skills profile through regular participation in transfer activities.
The Fraunhofer Society pursues the goal of successfully bringing technological innovations into the economy and society. Examples such as tumor detection using artificial intelligence or autonomous trucks on highways are just some of the impressive developments. This commitment requires close cooperation and a functioning exchange between science and business in order to enable the transfer of research findings into new products and services.
Interdisciplinarity as the key to innovation
The challenges that society faces – be it structural change, sustainability or digitalization – can increasingly only be overcome through interdisciplinary approaches. The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft promotes this process through direct research collaborations, targeted training, advanced training and technology spin-offs. Since 2000, over 480 spin-offs have been created that act as a bridge between research and business and promote the transfer of innovation.
Additionally emphasizes that Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) the importance of knowledge and technology transfer in their work. With their activities, the Helmholtz centers contribute to securing Germany as a high-tech location and play an important role in the area of public services. They pool their know-how to apply innovative technologies, services and specific knowledge.
Technology transfer not only includes the identification and exploitation of inventions, but also the implementation of industrial orders and economic cooperation based on external inquiries. In this way, the AWI makes an important contribution to the transfer of knowledge from climate research and ecology, especially in polar and marine research, and becomes part of social decision-making processes.
