Tunisian in Germany: Prize for Prof. Dr. Kanoun awarded in Tunis!
On August 28, 2025, Prof. Dr. Olfa Kanoun, holder of the professorship for measurement and sensor technology at the TU Chemnitz, awarded the President of the Republic of Tunisia Prize for the best Tunisian researcher living abroad at the Carthage Palace in Tunis. This honor was presented by the Tunisian head of state Kais Saied and serves to recognize outstanding scientific achievements and technological innovations.
This award, presented by the Tunisian Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MESRS), is based on strict criteria. Scientific visibility, innovative strength and economic and social benefits are taken into account. Prof. Dr. Kanoun is particularly recognized for her excellence in scientific research and technological advances.
Academic career and achievements
Prof. Dr. Kanoun, who received his doctorate from the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich in 2001, has had an impressive academic career. She received her degree in electrical engineering and information technology from the Technical University of Munich in 1995. After her doctorate, which was awarded the AHMT e.V. research prize, she founded the impedance spectroscopy working group at the University of the Bundeswehr in Munich.
She has been teaching and researching at Chemnitz University of Technology since 2007. Here she has authored over 700 scientific publications that have been cited more than 8,000 times. Her research has contributed significantly to the development of intelligent sensors and new diagnostic methods.
Research activities and international networking
Prof. Dr. Kanoun has close ties to Tunisia, where she supervised over 100 theses and more than 20 doctoral students. She also organized more than 15 international summer schools and developed over 30 research projects with Tunisian institutions. Its role as a catalyst for scientific exchange is of great importance.
She was also actively involved in the founding of the start-up NanoSen GmbH and is the (co-)owner of seven patents in the field of sensor technology and nanomaterials. In addition, she coordinates numerous large-scale international projects at EU level and within the framework of the German Research Foundation.
Appreciation and awards
The Vice Rector for Research and University Development at Chemnitz University of Technology, Prof. Dr. Anja Strobel, congratulated Prof. Dr. Kanoun warmly welcomed her award and emphasized the excellence of the scientific achievements of Kanoun and her team. In addition to the most recent award, she was also awarded the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society Technical Award and was twice selected as an IEEE Distinguished Lecturer, in 2016 and 2022.
Prof. Dr. Kanoun, born in Sfax, Tunisia, is now considered a leading expert in sensing, impedance spectroscopy and nanomaterials and is internationally recognized not only for her academic achievements but also for her significant contributions to research. The prizes and awards she has received are not only a personal success, but also evidence of the high regard for her work in the international scientific community.
