Viadrina strengthens equal opportunities and diversity in higher education!
The Technical University of Bergakademie Freiberg recently elected a new management team that is starting the future with fresh approaches and a clear mission. Rector Professor Swetlana K. Hübner thanked the outgoing vice-rectors, Professor Tobias Fieback and Professor Andreas Horsch, for their committed work and their willingness to remain in office until the handover of office despite the upcoming new elections. In a clear sign of continuity, the Rector herself takes over the areas of communication and international management.
She will be supported by Professor Henning Zeidler and Professor Carsten Drebenstedt, who will be intensively involved in their respective departments. Professor Urs Peuker will remain active as Chief Information Officer (CIO) in areas of digitalization and technological progress. He has significantly developed the TUBAFdigital area, which is of central importance for the university.
Focus on equal opportunities and diversity
A forward-looking element of the new management team is the authorization of Professor Yvonne Joseph, who will represent the area of equal opportunities and diversity at the rectorate level. The university has made it its mission to establish an inclusive organizational culture that reduces inequalities and promotes respectful interaction with one another. This corresponds to the objectives of the Viadrina, which defines educational equality and good working conditions as core tasks.
Through these measures, the Technical University of Freiberg will also contribute to strengthening an open and international scientific culture. The Rector emphasizes that the community in the Rectorate and a stronger student orientation are crucial to mastering future challenges. This includes funding research projects, recruiting new students and further developing digital and sustainable structures.
Diversity as a resource
The importance of diversity at German universities is also clear in the “Diversity at German Universities” initiative, which is supported by many universities, including Viadrina. This initiative focuses on equal opportunities and educational success by promoting individual talents and multi-perspective experiences. A total of 33 projects for the implementation of diversity concepts are being funded, which further strengthens the exchange about diversity within universities.
The Rector concludes with a clear commitment to promoting diversity: “We view the diversity of people as an essential resource for our university.” This is not only pursued as a goal, but is firmly anchored in the programs and strategies of the Equal Opportunities Department, which deals with issues such as inclusion, anti-discrimination and gender diversity.
In view of the upcoming challenges in the university landscape, the new management team at the Technical University of Freiberg will continue to work with commitment and innovation to implement these ambitious goals. In doing so, the university not only shows that progress and community can go hand in hand, but also that a respectful and fair academic culture is a central part of its values.
In view of these developments, the importance of universities as pioneers in social change is becoming increasingly clear, and the Technical University of Freiberg is positioning itself as a groundbreaking example for other institutions.
