Diversity in Chemnitz: The third Diversity Day inspires the university!
On May 20, 2025 took place at the Chemnitz University of Technology The third Diversity Day takes place, which helps to promote cosmopolitanism, diversity and tolerance in higher education. The Vice-Rector Prof. Dr. Anja Strobel opened the event and welcomed the guests in the foyer of the central lecture hall and seminar building.
Various university institutions, projects and Chemnitz clubs presented themselves and offered participants a platform for exchanging information about diversity topics. A central attraction was the traveling exhibition “Conversation material(s). Life situations of lsbtiq* people in Saxony”, which was on display there from May 2nd to 20th, 2025. This exhibition includes eleven exhibits that address areas such as education, work and social networks and use materials and colors that symbolize the diversity and resistance of the queer community.
Scientific contributions and workshops
The first scientific lecture was given by Prof. Dr. Tanja Carstensen, who spoke about digital work and its interactions with diversity. Prof. Dr. Bertolt Meyer also appeared and explained the effects of stereotypes. A wide range of workshops complemented the program, including a workshop on diversity sensitivity led by Dr. Maike Lüssenhop, and offers for diversity-sensitive teaching.
Additionally, workshops on “Open Science and LGBTIQ+ research” were offered. As part of the event, Jasmin Friese gave insights into the challenges faced by first-time graduates and the afternoon included a taster course in sign language. This was followed by the “Living Neighborhood” project, presented by Dr. Julia Naunin and Dr. Stephanie Troppmann.
Another highlight was a diversity quiz organized by the Center for Equal Opportunities. The participants also had the opportunity to mark their countries of origin and desired travel destinations on a world map. During the lunch break, a variety of apple-related dishes were served.
Relevance and legal framework
The Diversity Day took place as part of the German Diversity Day, which has been held every year since 2012. The legal framework for diversity and inclusion in Germany is strengthened by the General Equal Treatment Act (AGG) and the Disability Equality Act (BGG). These laws aim to prevent discrimination and promote equal participation for all people. The AGG protects against discrimination based on race, gender, religion, disability, age or sexual identity. Living Quarter Additionally highlights that companies are increasingly recognizing the importance of diversity and inclusion for their business success and are investing in strategies to promote diversity.
Chemnitz University of Technology already has plans for another Diversity Day in 2026, thereby continuing its commitment to inclusive higher education. Such events and initiatives are important not only for the university itself, but also for society as a whole. They help to actively shape the discourse on diversity and social justice and to create training opportunities for everyone involved.
