Diversity and identity: traveling exhibition on lsbtiq* realities of life in Chemnitz
The Chemnitz University of Technology is opening an important traveling exhibition entitled “Conversation material(s) – life situations of lsbtiq* people in Saxony”. This will take place from May 2nd to 20th, 2025 on the upper floor of the central lecture hall and seminar building at Reichenhainer Straße 90. The aim of the exhibition is to provide comprehensive insights into the lives of lsbtiq* people who live in Saxony.
The exhibition includes a total of eleven exhibits, including informative text panels, jute-framed quotes and creative fabric installations. These elements reflect both the realities of life and the challenges that queer people face every day. The fabrics and materials used are designed to reflect the diversity and resilience of the queer community.
Thematic focuses
The exhibition covers several central subject areas. These are education and training, healthcare, the world of work and livelihood security. Aspects such as family and social networks, child and youth welfare and dealing with state institutions are also discussed. To make the research results understandable, the organizers use summarized evaluations, diagrams and meaningful quotes.
Particular attention is paid to experiences of discrimination. The exhibition not only addresses the disadvantages, but also the process of finding identity and coming out for lsbtiq* people. This is an appeal for recognition and equal rights for all people, regardless of gender and sexuality. These messages are particularly relevant in the context of the results of the background study for the exhibition.
Background of the exhibition
The traveling exhibition is based on the comprehensive study “Life situations of lsbtiq* people in Saxony”, which was commissioned by the Saxon State Ministry of Justice and for Democracy, Europe and Equality in June 2022. The study was carried out by Rauh Research Management and recorded the living conditions of 1,490 lsbtiq* people, whose average age is 29 years, as well as 179 relatives. The online survey was available until the beginning of January 2022 and provided important data on lifestyles, coexistence and experiences of discrimination.
The participants were also asked questions on topics such as the desire to have children and responsibility for friends in order to get a comprehensive picture of their life situations. The survey was available in multiple languages to enable broad participation.
Events and opening times
The exhibition opens its doors from Monday to Friday, from 7:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. A highlight of the exhibition will be Diversity Day on May 20, 2025. On this day, Britta Borrego and Theresa Zängler will present the exhibition at 9:30 a.m., followed by a lecture at 10:30 a.m. in seminar room N002.
For more information about the exhibition and to borrow materials, visitors are invited to the official website gespraechsstoffe.de to visit. Here you can also find detailed information on the background study that led to the exhibition, as well as on the ongoing work of the Saxon State Ministry to improve the living conditions of lsbtiq* people.
This initiative represents an important step towards visibility and recognition of the realities of lsbtiq* communities in Saxony and will certainly help to create greater awareness of the challenges and needs of this community.
