Economic education: TU Dresden strengthens high schools in teaching!

The Faculty of Economics TU Dresden This school year has developed a new curriculum that is intended to support high schools in implementing the school-specific profile “Entrepreneurial Education”. This program is intended to promote students' economic understanding and help lay the foundations for their professional future.

On August 27, 2025, an information event took place in the faculty's ballroom, attended by 25 teachers from Dresden and the surrounding area. This was organized by the State Office for Schools and Education (LaSuB). Professor Dr. Peter Schäfer, dean of studies at the faculty, emphasized the importance of economics in the context of school education and the need to impart economic knowledge to prospective students and specialists.

Information about the event

As part of the event, the new curriculum was presented by the Saxon State Ministry of Culture. Anja Rogas, a research assistant, offered a practical example, presenting a simulation game that has been offered to 8th grade students at the Tolkewitz high school since 2023. This simulation game was highlighted as an innovative method to clearly convey economic concepts.

The TU Dresden also offers teachers various formats to support school classes and offer orientation for studies and careers. This includes offers for study orientation and science communication formats that make current research tangible for students. The school contact point at TU Dresden serves as a central contact point for teachers, which provides contacts and develops and implements formats with schools.

Study options and admission requirements

In the field of business education, those interested can choose to study both full-time and part-time in person. Both variants are subject to admission restrictions. The application deadline for the winter semester 2025/26 is July 15, 2025. Studies online reports that all applicants were offered a place to study in the winter semester of 2024/25, and the admission figures from the previous year result in a quota of 3.3 applications per place.

The discussion about economic content in curricula has gained momentum in recent years. According to a comprehensive study on the topic of economization in educational institutions, economic content is often not dominant in most curricula. Political and social science content predominates, which indicates a strong focus of the curricula on career orientation. The results of this study show that there is no significant economization of the curricula. Therefore, further research needs to be initiated to better understand the exact content and its implementation in teaching. For this purpose, the curricula should be processed in more detail than is necessary in order to adequately integrate economic concepts.

In summary, it should be noted that with the new curricula and supporting events, the TU Dresden is taking a decisive step towards more effective economic education in schools. The involvement of teachers and the practical teaching of content are essential building blocks for the future success of students in an increasingly economized society.
