Post-conflict societies in which such issues are of particular importance often have to contend with major challenges. According to the bpb.de The relapse rate into previous conflicts is up to 50%. Political, economic and social areas of life are often still heavily influenced by the after-effects of wars. Former parties to the conflict then live in parallel worlds, separated by both visible and invisible walls. Hardliners often have significant influence on public opinion and stand in the way of peacebuilding. Symbols and myths of exclusion make encounters and overcoming collective trauma more difficult.

Effectively building peace is not only a national but also an international matter. The Lecture in Lübeck shows how important it is to view peace processes in a comprehensive, integrative approach. Inclusive inclusion of all population groups is crucial to ensure long-term stability and avoid renewed conflict. Full support of the international framework and the creation of a viable consensus between new and old elites are essential to address the challenges of peacebuilding.
