Kiel opens MINTspace: The future of tomorrow's scientists!

On February 13, 2025, a new MINTspace was opened at Kiel University, which is aimed specifically at students in the MINT subjects (mathematics, computer science, natural sciences, technology) and other students. The space offers a unique opportunity for the practical implementation of ideas, scientific experiments and creative projects. Loud uni-kiel.de The technical devices and equipment on offer are state-of-the-art and include, among other things, 3D printers, microscopes, augmented reality (AR) glasses and soldering stations.

The MINTspace is intended to help students carry out scientific work, develop prototypes and carry out experiments for seminars and internships. The room is equipped with presentation technology such as a projector and an audio system so that results can be presented in an appealing way. Students can also plan their own learning materials, which promotes creative handling of technical and scientific topics. This is also seen as an initiative to increase interest in STEM subjects and support interdisciplinary collaboration.

Spatial and technical equipment

The MINTspace is located in Segment 1, Corridor 1 of the Kiel University Library. It offers both digital and analogue tools and is accessible during regular opening hours on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. A contact person is always on site to help with questions and instructions. Some devices require special training, which is offered on a regular basis. If you want to use the room outside opening hours, for example for workshops or tutorials, you must contact us. The contact persons for this are Julian Rudnik and Jörn Willers Radke, who can be reached by email.

Urgency of STEM programs

The opening of the MINTspace comes at a time when Germany is facing a serious shortage of skilled workers in the MINT areas. According to that Technopolis Group There is currently a shortage of around 250,000 MINT specialists in the country. In addition, dropout rates in MINT courses are alarmingly high. 49% of MINT students change their subject or drop out of their studies. These factors make the need to attract more students into STEM fields and better support them urgent.

The MINTspace is part of a larger trend in higher education that emphasizes the promotion of interdisciplinary approaches and interface skills. In this context, the Stifterverband is committed to such interdisciplinary MINT education in order to increase the number of MINT graduates and to provide them with additional relevant skills. Even though there are already approaches to MINTplus programs in many European countries, the study shows that these are not systemically widespread. Germany has the opportunity to take a leading role through MINTspace and similar initiatives.

In summary, MINTspace is a promising step towards strengthening MINT education at Kiel University. It could make a decisive contribution to promoting academic success and improving the career opportunities of future graduates.
