Kiel Sustainability Days: Theater and workshops for a green future!
The Christian Albrechts University of Kiel (CAU) has the from May 13th to 15th, 2025 Sustainability Days organized. This event aimed to raise awareness about sustainability and promote dialogue about environmentally conscious practices. Students, employees and interested Kiel residents were invited to take part in a variety of activities. The program included lectures, workshops, guided tours and interactive formats on various aspects of sustainability.
A special highlight was the play “Climate Monologues,” which impressively presented different perspectives on climate change from different regions of the world. Numerous projects and organizations from the CAU and the city of Kiel also used the Audimax forecourt to present their initiatives. Kiel City Councilor for the Environment, Climate Protection and Mobility, Alke Voß, and CAU Chancellor Claudia Meyer appeared at the trade fair and emphasized the need for the lively implementation of sustainability measures at the university.
Diverse workshops and lectures
Various workshops were offered as part of the event. The focus was on topics such as CO₂ reduction during business trips and the creation of sustainable learning environments. The CAU cafeteria also provided interesting insights into their sustainable work processes. The specialist lectures presented covered important topics such as interdisciplinary cooperation in the area of sustainability, psychological aspects and environmental problems in connection with drug residues.
Despite the diversity of the offering, the organizers wanted a higher participation rate in the workshops and lectures. The Sustainability Days were organized by the CAU's Green Office and the klik Environmental Management department. This initiative is part of a comprehensive change process aimed at promoting a sustainable university culture.
CAU sustainability goals
The CAU sets itself ambitious goals and aims to become greenhouse gas neutral by 2030. The measures focus on the economical use of natural resources, the optimization of energy requirements and the promotion of biodiversity and waste avoidance. Such steps are intended not only to reduce the university's environmental footprint, but also to reduce operating costs to support research and teaching. Chancellor Claudia Meyer, who also acts as environmental management officer, emphasizes the central importance of environmental and climate protection at the university.
The current reporting most recently noted that in April 2025, evaluations of the previous year showed savings in the heating sector and an increase in electricity production from photovoltaic systems. In addition, Campus CleanUp Day took place on April 29th, during which waste was removed from the campus. In March, the Presidium and the Senate decided on new environmental goals for the period 2025 to 2027 in the area of environmental management.
The CAU also participates in a broader context of higher education related to sustainability. The University of Cologne has also developed comprehensive strategies to equip students with the knowledge and skills they need for a more sustainable world. This is done through interdisciplinary courses that deal with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and create innovative teaching and learning opportunities.
The CAU's steps and its Sustainability Days initiative are part of an important dialogue about the responsibility of universities today to sensitize both teachers and students to the challenges of climate change.
