New guide: CO2 removal from the ocean for climate protection!
Climate change is forcing society to find innovative ways to remove CO2 from the atmosphere, particularly through ocean-based processes. Scientists from the CDRmare research mission, who work at Kiel University (CAU), among others, have developed a new evaluation guide that is intended to help those responsible make fact-based decisions about the implementation of such methods. Loud uni-kiel.de The aim of the guide is to assess the potential consequences for people and nature.
The guide includes 29 criteria divided into seven topic areas. Technical, legal and political feasibility as well as economic efficiency and environmental ethics are considered. According to experts, existing evaluation schemes are not sufficient, which is why the development of an innovative approach is necessary to adequately take into account the complexity of CO2 extraction methods.
Interdisciplinary approach and testing of the guide
The researchers recommend involving experts from different areas in the evaluation process in order to create a sound basis for decision-making. The guide has already been tested in transdisciplinary workshops. Representatives from authorities and interest groups took part in these days to examine the practical applicability of the criteria developed. Five guiding principles have been defined to ensure a higher quality of information collected and promote transparency. Ultimately, the decision to implement a marine CO2 removal project lies with those politically and socially responsible, who should be able to select effective and environmentally friendly projects.
The new assessment guide, published as part of CDRmare's work, is eight pages long and is aimed at responsible actors who need to decide whether marine CO2 extraction methods can become a reality. The document was presented in the publication “CDRmare Insights”, published by GEOMAR was published.
CO2 removal as part of the climate protection strategy
At an event in Berlin, CDRmare and CDRterra highlighted the importance of CO2 extraction and storage to achieve climate neutrality in Germany. On July 2nd, around 50 participants from politics and practice took part in the discussion. cdrmare.de reported that during this event not only the results of the research were presented, but also the need for a dialogue between science, politics, business and society was discussed.
The discussion centered on the role of the ocean and its coastal ecosystems in CO2 removal. It was emphasized that studying the risks and side effects of CO2 extraction methods is crucial. In addition, five core messages on CO2 extraction and storage were communicated:
- CDR ist notwendig als Ergänzung zu Emissionsreduktionen.
- Potenziale und Unsicherheiten von CDR-Methoden müssen weiter erforscht werden.
- Ein breites CDR-Portfolio kann Risiken minimieren.
- Aufbau von Markt, Regulierung, MRV und Infrastruktur ist wichtig für CDR-Hochlauf.
- Biodiversität und Nachhaltigkeitsziele dürfen durch CDR nicht gefährdet werden.
The results of these efforts are crucial for implementing effective climate action. Through continuous research and evaluation of CO2 removal measures, effective strategies can be developed that meet both ecological and social requirements.
