A new wind at the European University of Flensburg: deans elected!

On April 9, 2025, key personnel decisions were made at the European University of Flensburg (EUF). Prof. Dr. Maike Busker and Prof. Dr. Birgit Peuker was confirmed as dean and dean of studies at Faculty I. Prof. Dr. Busker, who works in chemistry and its didactics, takes on a key role in academic leadership. Your colleague, Prof. Dr. Peuker, brings her expertise in the professional fields of nutrition and home economics. These new appointments are part of a strategic realignment at the university, which introduced a middle management level with three faculties in 2023 in order to strengthen the decentralized ability to act and make decisions. 

In addition, on March 12, 2025, Professor Dr. Karsten Mackensen as Dean and Prof. Dr. Hedwig Wagner elected as dean of studies. Prof. Mackensen, recognized as a professor of musicology, succeeds Prof. Dr. Nils Langer. Prof. Wagner, Professor of European Media Studies, replaces Prof. Dr. Tanja Zybatow in her role. At Faculty III, also on March 12, 2025, Prof. Dr. Florian Bruckmann as dean and Prof. Dr. Marcel Smolka elected as dean of studies. Prof. Bruckmann, who represents Catholic theology, and Prof. Smolka, a specialist in international and institutional economics, will succeed Prof. Dr. Tabea Scheel and Prof. Dr. Jürgen Budde, who previously headed the faculty.

About the European University of Flensburg

The European University of Flensburg is the northernmost university in Germany and was founded in 1946 as a university of education before receiving full university status in 1994. Today, around 5,992 students (as of the fall semester 2023/24) are studying there in various degree programs that focus on educational sciences, interdisciplinary European studies and economics. The range of courses currently includes 17 courses, including bachelor's and master's qualifications.

With around 675 employees, including 83 professors, and an annual budget of 50 million euros, the EUF is an important educational institution in the region. The university maintains international partnerships and cooperates, among others, with the University of Southern Denmark in Sønderborg to promote German-Danish study programs. This shows the EUF's strong position in an intercultural context, supported by its geographical proximity to Denmark.

Campus and infrastructure

The campus of the European University of Flensburg extends over around 30 hectares and is also shared by the Flensburg University of Applied Sciences. Facilities include the Auditorium Maximum (Audimax), a central library, various parks as well as student residences and a sports center. A phenological climate garden has enriched campus life since 2023. Students will find numerous options for meals and exchanges in the canteen, cafeterias and bar.

The EUF also promotes study integration through programs such as ProRef, which has been supporting refugees since 2015. In addition, a comprehensive language center is provided that offers language courses and integration programs.

With over 80 partner universities in 35 countries, the European University of Flensburg is involved in international projects and offers extensive support for student mobility. The recent personnel changes in the dean's offices are an important step in further shaping the academic future of the university and consolidating its leading role in the field of education.
