New procedure for electing the president at the CAU has started!
On October 8, 2025, the University Council and the Extended Senate of the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel initiated the process to elect a new president. This is happening as part of the grueling transformation of leadership positions within the university landscape. The procedure is regulated by specific procedural steps that support the claim to transparency and legal conformity.
A key measure in this process is the formation of a search committee. This commission, consisting of two members of the University Council and six members of the Extended Senate, has the central task of developing a nomination for the new election. In detail, this means that the search committee consists of three professors, one person from the group of students, one person from the academic service and one person from the technical-administrative service.
Tasks of the search committee
The search committee will develop a tender text in the coming months. After the application phase has been completed, the applications received will be reviewed. There will then be interviews with suitable candidates. The procedure is designed to be confidential, with regular reports to the Senate in closed session.
Senate Chairman Prof. Mathias Vetter emphasized that expectations of a speedy and legally flawless procedure are high. The goal of the search committee is to make a decision that is convincing in terms of content. The constituent meeting is planned for the coming weeks, in which a chairman will also be elected.
The election process in detail
These steps to elect a new president are very reminiscent of the procedures at other universities. The Goethe University has set processes in which the University Council selects the candidates together with the Senate. A search committee is also formed there to create the requirements profile and review the applications before public hearings of the candidates take place.
After these hearings, the University Council prepares an election proposal, which is made in consultation with the Extended Senate. The final election takes place in a secret vote among the members of the Extended Senate. The person who receives the votes of the majority of the members is elected. In addition, the University Council consists of eleven members who come from different groups at the university, which ensures a diverse representation of interests.
It remains to be seen how the process at Christian Albrechts University will develop. The election of the new president is closely related to the demands placed on university management, both at Kiel University and at other institutions that are in constant change.
