Science communication in focus: discussion and exchange in Lübeck!
An important panel discussion on science communication will take place in Lübeck on June 5, 2025. This event is organized by the biotechnological student initiative (btS) Lübeck and is aimed at students, doctoral candidates and anyone interested in dealing with the challenges and opportunities of science communication. The discussion begins at 4:30 p.m. in room MFC9-S06, Maria-Göppert-Str. 15.
The topic of the panel discussion is shaped by the need to communicate science in an understandable way. According to [uni-luebeck.de], one goal of the event is to discuss how research results and the methodology behind them can be made accessible to a broader public. Important points such as characteristics of good science communication and the role of science communicators are discussed. The question also arises as to how criticism can be dealt with constructively.
Panel guests and exchange opportunities
The invited panel guests include Prof. Dr. Martin Smollich and Dr. Anja Stähle, both of whom will contribute significantly to the discussion. The plan is to provide an opportunity to chat over drinks and snacks after the discussion to promote networking opportunities. The btS – Life Science Student Initiative e.V. aims to build bridges between universities, industry and other actors in order to promote exchange.
The current importance of science communication should not be underestimated. According to [geistes-und-socialsciences-bmbf.de], it has become a central issue in society, especially given the diverse and complex content of science. Scientists from various disciplines, including marine biologists and archaeologists, will be involved in similar discussion formats to illuminate different perspectives and develop appropriate communication strategies.
Insights into university communication
The focus on university communication is also clear in a study by the University of Zurich, which is covered in [Wissenschaftskommunikation.de]. This study analyzes how different actors at universities interact with each other on platforms such as Twitter. It is found that decentralized institutional voices, such as those of doctoral students and other researchers, play a crucial role. These voices, which often communicate scientific content, make up an impressive 81% of the total votes.
Another interesting aspect of science communication research is the creation of a sense of belonging among doctoral students, which can be fostered through engagement in these areas. Negative experiences in academic spaces are also discussed, which suggests that science communication should not only be informative, but also inclusive and barrier-free.
In summary, the upcoming panel discussion in Lübeck shows how important it is for scientists to communicate their messages to the public clearly and understandably. The event offers a platform to discuss relevant topics in science communication and to develop new approaches that benefit society. Those interested are encouraged to register in advance for better planning.
