Ceremony at the Bauhaus University: Freshmen celebrate their start!

The matriculation ceremony for the new academic year took place at the Bauhaus University Weimar on October 16, 2025. The president of the university, Prof. Peter Benz, and Dr. Simon Frisch, Vice President for Teaching and Learning, warmly welcomed the new students. Mayor Ralf Kirsten gave the freshmen an insight into life in Weimar and spoke to the young academics on behalf of the city.

The event offered new students an excellent opportunity to familiarize themselves with the university and its surroundings. Representatives of the Student Convention (StuKo) introduced the student self-administration and invited everyone present to actively participate in shaping campus life. This is particularly important because the student council acts as an important institution that represents the interests of students in university and governmental matters, such as Wikipedia describes.

Ceremony and speeches

A highlight of the event was the speech by Dipl.-Ing. Architect Ines M. Jauck, President of the Thuringia Chamber of Architects and alumna of the Bauhaus University. She spoke about her experiences during her studies and the significant detours she took on her professional path. These motivational insights encouraged the audience to be open and curious about their own study and life paths.

The guests of honor included State Secretaries Mario Suckert from the Thuringian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Rural Areas and Christian Klein from the Thuringian Ministry of Justice, Migration and Consumer Protection, who also took an active part in the celebrations. Between the speeches, the musical duo “Heart Sisters” created a festive atmosphere and entertained the guests with their sounds.

A champagne reception in the foyer of the university library promoted exchanges between new and old students. In this way, the first-year students were able to make contact with their fellow students and make their first friends. This type of networking is crucial in order to quickly immerse yourself in university life and get to know your own student council.

Students are automatically members of their respective student council, which is made up of students from a faculty. They have the opportunity to organize themselves into specialist groups and student councils that represent the concerns of the students. Structuring and co-determination within the student body are therefore fundamental to the commitment of students at the Bauhaus University Weimar and form an important part of understanding internal university life.
