Gotha celebrates 1250 years: Spectacular special exhibition in the Ducal Museum!

On the occasion of the 1250th anniversary of the city of Gotha, the special exhibition "GOTHA GENIAL?! Flashes of inspiration and long-running favorites from 1250 years" opens in the Ducal Museum. The exhibition will take place from April 27th to October 26th, 2025 and, together with the University of Erfurt exciting topics on politics, education, economics, crafts and international influence. In addition, local clubs and their commitment as well as typical characteristics of Gotha are also discussed.

An important part of the exhibition are the results of the cooperation project “Little Freedom: Celebration, Photography, Oral History”. Students interviewed citizens from Gotha to record their personal memories and views on festivals and the topic of freedom. The multimedia implementation shows, among other things, a photo collection from the Friedenstein Foundation Gotha, which documents celebrations from around 120 years of the city's history.

Diverse exhibits and offers

A total of around 180 exhibits will be presented. These come primarily from the collection of the Friedenstein Foundation Gotha and are supplemented by loans and digital copies. Visitors can look forward to original contemporary documents, speeches and emotional stories brought to life with audio recordings. A special children's level will be set up for younger visitors, which will be enriched by sound and video stations.

An audio guide is offered in both German and English, designed as a discovery tour for children. In order to deepen the discussion of the exhibition, a catalog will also be published. Entry to the exhibition costs 8 euros, reduced 4 euros, while children and young people up to 12 years of age have free entry. Further information is on the website gotha-genial.de to find.

Historical context: Jewish life in Erfurt

Archaeological finds, building and written sources enable a reconstruction of historical life in the Jewish quarter. In the shop window at Michaelisstrasse 6 you will see a remarkable stone that contains the remains of a Hebrew inscription, discovered in the 1990s. This stone, which was probably built after 1350, shows clear signs of fire, which may have come from the pogrom in 1349. The inscription is badly damaged, which, however, suggests a Yiddish inscription in Hebrew letters - a rarity that makes the Erfurt find special.
