Ilmenau celebrates innovation: The biggest patent conference of the year!

From May 21st to 23rd, 2025, the Ilmenau University of Technology hosted the 47th colloquium on patent information and intellectual property protection, known as PATINFO2025, which took place under the motto “Innovation through knowledge: patents, standards and research in focus”. The welcome evening in the Audimax kicked off the event, followed by two days of intensive exchange in the Ilmenau Festival Hall, where 32 exhibitors and numerous specialist lectures awaited the participants.

Mayor Dr. In his opening speech, Daniel Schultheiss underlined the traditional combination of patents and technical innovations in Ilmenau. This city has established itself as an important location for research and development. Expertise and knowledge exchange

In a keynote, Maria Skottke-Klein from the German Patent and Trademark Office (DPMA) spoke about researching the existing state of the art in patent databases. This is a central aspect for the development of new innovations, as thorough patent research is essential for any research and development work.

Attorney Frederic Casañs emphasized the essential role of collaboration between research, patent attorneys and patent service providers. The synergies that arise from this collaboration are crucial for the advancement of technology.

The event is considered the most important conference for patent management in the German-speaking region and attracts experts from various areas. Participants came from industry, patent offices, law firms, the information sector as well as data providers and research. At the same time, software providers and information service providers had the opportunity to present the latest developments, which promoted networking in the industry.

Looking into the future

The aim of the event was to attract exploitation partners from industry in order to put the technologies and ideas developed into practice. This will further strengthen the bridge between science and business.

PATINFO2026 is already planned for the future, which will take place in Ilmenau from June 10th to 12th.
