Ilmenau electrical engineering genius receives study award for 6G research!

On May 16, 2025, Lorenz Mohr, a graduate of electrical engineering and information technology from the Ilmenau University of Technology, was awarded the prestigious SEW-EURODRIVE Foundation study award. The prize, which is endowed with 2,500 euros, was presented in Bruchsal and recognizes Mohr's outstanding scientific thesis. This dealt with the measurement data-based analysis of the performance of algorithms for radar applications, a central topic in the emerging Industry 4.0.

The jury praised Mohr for his comprehensive contribution to research into wireless sensor communication. This technology is particularly relevant for intelligent and automated systems. His diploma thesis was supervised by Professor Jörg Robert at the Department of Electronic Measurement Technology and Signal Processing at the TU Ilmenau. Mohr completed his work with the highest grade.

Commitment and research

In addition to his academic successes, Mohr was also nominated for his commitment outside of his studies. He spent five months at the University of California, Irvine, where he researched smart reflective surfaces. This topic is a key area in the context of 6G technology.

Mohr is currently working as a research assistant at the TU Ilmenau, where he works in the Radio Modeling, Sounding and Sensing (RAMSES) team. He is actively involved in the 6G-ICAS4Mobility project funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, which focuses on the integration of communication and radar systems into a 6G system.

In the 2024/25 winter semester, he already supervised two courses and was involved in social activities within his research group.

The role of 6G in industry

The 6G system plays a crucial role in the further development of the industrial communication structure. As part of the MultiNet6G project, in which partners such as SEW-Eurodrive and Koblenz University of Applied Sciences are also involved, the aim is to integrate various wireless communication technologies under a uniform 6G network architecture. The goal is to realize seamless transitions between technologies for autonomous logistics systems.

The technologies used include cellular (5G, 6G), WiFi, Visible Light Communication (VLC) and radar modules. Although these technologies are already in commercial use, they are not yet shared. The project pursues the vision of combining wireless technologies for safety-critical communication and thus exploiting the full potential of autonomous logistics.

The challenges focus on the coexistence of different wireless technologies as well as the requirements for industrial automation and urban logistics. Especially in connection with increasing demands from autonomous vehicles and drones, reliable communication is becoming crucial to ensure safety and efficiency.

In this context, the 6G Valley stands out, in which the research focus is on the further development of mobile communications and communication technologies. Important areas of application include smart cities, autonomous driving and Industry 4.0. Cybersecurity and sustainable infrastructure are also key issues.

The 6G Valley serves as a platform for interdisciplinary collaboration, which benefits scientists and companies in the mobile communications and communications technology sector. This makes access to current research results easier and promotes the joint development of new technologies.

The developments associated with 6G are significant for shaping the future of communications infrastructure and can have far-reaching impacts on society. The commitment of talents like Lorenz Mohr plays an essential role in the implementation of these visions.
