Computer science workshop in Ilmenau: Discover the digital future!
The Ilmenau University of Technology invites students in grades 8 to 13 to a computer science workshop that will take place on June 14, 2025. The event starts at 9:00 a.m. and ends at 3:30 p.m. The venue is the Zusebau of the TU Ilmenau. This event offers participants the opportunity to explore the exciting world of computer science up close and gain practical experience.
The workshop is limited to 20 participants, which enables individual support and intensive exchange. Those interested can register until June 9th, either via the TU Ilmenau website or via QR code to receive the registration form. Cordula Giewald from the Faculty of Computer Science and Automation is available to answer any questions.
Workshop content and activities
The content of the workshop is diverse and offers a broad overview of various areas of computer science. The participants receive an introduction to the basic processes involved in using the Internet, especially data forwarding on the Internet. In addition, the basic principles of data transmission from web servers to end devices are discussed. Students are invited to take part in practical experiments that, among other things, examine the transport methods of data packets.
The focus is particularly on topics such as:
- Sichtbare Informatik: Computergestützte Spiele, Web-Anwendungen und Suchmaschinen
- Eingebettete Systeme, etwa in Fahrzeugen oder der Medizintechnik
- Die Funktionsweise autonomer Fahrzeuge und deren Programmierung
- Die Internetlogistik bei der Paketzustellung
- Big Data und dessen Analyse
In addition, participants have the opportunity to hold discussions with scientists and students. A parents' café offers accompanying parents information about studying and life in Ilmenau, which can support the decision-making process for training in computer science.
Practical applications in focus
An example of a hands-on activity is building a circuit to record heart sounds using a cell phone, which will help students understand embedded systems. In addition, the investigation of the paths between two end systems on the Internet is discussed, with various methods such as the distance vector algorithm being presented.
In summary, the computer science workshop at the Ilmenau University of Technology not only offers an exciting introduction to a crucial industry, but also important insights into the practical applications of computer science. Participants only need a head and a pen to write in order to actively participate in the event.
