Sound and structure: shocking findings at the science camp in Weimar!

Starts on September 29, 2025 Bauhaus University Weimar the 8th Science Camp for Thuringian engineering students. From September 22nd to October 1st, a total of 25 master's students will have the opportunity to gain practical experience with acoustic signals from vibrating building structures.

The camp is organized by Jun.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. Lars Abrahamczyk, supported by the Alliance of Thuringian Engineering Sciences. The focus is on the integration of structural, dynamic and acoustic principles to investigate how structures react to different vibrations and what noises are created. In particular, the connection between earthquakes and the corresponding vibration behavior of building structures is researched.

Practical activities and studies

The participants are involved in various activities. This involves building a simple aluminum structure that will be equipped with instruments and sensors. Shake table tests provide a hands-on opportunity to observe the response of structures to simulated earthquakes.

Another highlight of the camp is the sound experiment, which will be carried out on September 30, 2025 from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Here, participants experience how vibrations can be converted into sounds and gain unique insights into the acoustic interpretation of building vibrations. The experiment takes place in Marienstrasse 7, room 205/206.

Networking and continuing education

A central goal of the Science Camp is to network students with industrial partners and other universities in Thuringia. In addition to practical experience, participants have the opportunity to take part in excursions and guest lectures where they can get to know potential employers.

Registration for the free camp is possible until August 10, 2025. All participants receive a certificate of 2 ECTS that documents the scope of work and the topics covered.

In order to learn more about acoustics topics that are also important in other areas such as room and building acoustics, participants have the opportunity to learn about the basics of this discipline. This knowledge is relevant not only to engineering, but also to designing pleasant sound environments in various applications ranging from offices to concert halls.

The projects carried out so far as part of the science camps show a wide range of MINT topics. These include, among other things, autonomous vehicles and self-watering plant walls, which provide a practical connection to current technological developments.
