Culture in focus: Weimar discusses future issues on June 19, 2025!
The Bauhaus University Weimar invites you to its sixth event in the “Beyond Now ⸺ Future Questions of Society” series, which will take place on June 19, 2025 in the university’s main building. This series aims to shed light on current social issues while combining different perspectives. The event is scheduled for 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and will be moderated by Carsten Tesch from Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk. Invited discussants include Annemie Vanackere, the director of Hebbel am Ufer Berlin, and Ulrike Lorenz, President of the Klassik Stiftung Weimar, as well as Prof. Peter Benz, President of the Bauhaus University Weimar.
The focus of the discussion is the role of culture as a framework for interpretation and as a shaping force in social transformation processes. The term “cultura”, which comes from Latin and means “to maintain, build, preserve”, opens up a scope for action that could be decisive for the future. The event will also be offered as a live stream, giving those interested the opportunity to participate online. University of Weimar reports.
Joint reflection on social issues
Ulrike Kuch, university lecturer for architectural theory and vice president for social transformation at the Bauhaus University, founded the “Beyond Now” event series together with Maximilian Rünker. This includes a total of seven events and addresses local, national and international perspectives on future issues. The kick-off event took place on April 10, 2023 on the topic “What is social transformation?” instead of. Another important date in the context of the series was May 8, 2023, the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Buchenwald concentration camp, which encouraged the university to include historical experiences from National Socialism and the GDR in the discussions. But it's not just the historical context that plays a role, current social challenges are also a topic of discussion. On April 24, 2023, the question of the “future of democracy” was raised, which invited participants to a critical discussion. The various perspectives addressed in the series are important not only to students but also to the broader public. Knowledge establishes.
Cultural engagement and social responsibility
By discussing cultural and social issues, the Bauhaus University Weimar wants to create a space that not only promotes intellectual debate, but also focuses on social responsibility. The challenges of today require a rethink, and the university sees itself as an interdisciplinary platform for these important debates.
The upcoming event on June 19th will give participants the opportunity to reflect on the importance of culture in transformation processes and to provide new impulses for social development. By including experts and prominent voices, a broad discourse is initiated that takes both local and global aspects into account. The invitation applies to everyone who is interested in the future and the role of culture in society.
