Art meets technology: Innovative projects for a sustainable tomorrow!
On July 23, 2025, the Faculty of Art and Design at the Bauhaus University Weimar launched a second open call for artistic-technological collaborations. This call aims to promote the transfer of results at the interface of art, design and technology. The project consortium, which includes Weimar, supports the presentation of innovative approaches to addressing social challenges in various European cities, including Mendrisio and Barcelona. The funded projects are intended to apply the LAUDS model to develop creative solutions to social problems.
As part of this call, at least eight projects will receive financial support, with each team receiving up to 27,000 euros. Applications are open to collaborations that consist of at least two organizations - one with a creative focus, the other with a technological focus. These teams should be based in an EU member state or an associated country. The deadline for submitting projects has been set at 5 p.m. (CET) on September 4, 2025. The presentation of the results is planned for 2026 at Ars Electronica in Linz.
Thematic focuses and objectives
The funded projects are intended to address specific challenges from three central topic areas: mobility, energy and agriculture and nutrition. The area of mobility includes, among other things, active and non-motorized transportation, inclusive access and the reduction of CO₂ emissions through data-based user information.
In the energy sector, the focus is on autonomous energy systems, DIY renewables and biomaterials for interiors. Finally, in the area of agriculture and nutrition, solutions for the utilization of food waste, urban vertical farming concepts and sustainable materials for urban cultivation are to be developed.
Art and culture as drivers of sustainable development
The initiatives not only contribute to artistic innovation, but are also in the context of the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These goals emphasize the importance of arts and culture as crucial elements that can contribute to promoting diversity, inclusion and the sustainable use of resources. In addition, the recent course of the COVID-19 pandemic shows how resilient the cultural sector can be when new digital formats emerge.
The implementation of the SDGs in the cultural sector includes a variety of objectives that strive for innovation, sustainability and planning security for artists. Particularly noteworthy are the measures that contribute to strengthening cultural participation and raising awareness of environmental issues. In Austria, for example, a national report on the implementation of the SDGs is being prepared, which is scheduled to be published in July 2024.
Through initiatives such as the Open Call initiated by the Bauhaus University Weimar, it is clear that the artistic sector is actively contributing to overcoming global challenges and pushing forward creative solutions.
