Thuringia in focus: Internationalization of universities takes off!
On March 9, 2025, the Bauhaus University Weimar will usher in a new phase in international university cooperation with a central project launch. University President Prof. Peter Benz welcomes numerous international guests who take part in this groundbreaking meeting to discuss the plans of the Alliance for Internationalization to move forward. The aim of this initiative is to create positive effects for the regions of Europe.
Around 70 project participants, consisting of representatives from the participating universities, come together to work on the further development of their work plans over three days. A key focus of the first project phase is on the development and coordination of teaching formats between the participating universities. This is particularly relevant given the success of the planned Joint degree programs is closely linked to the need to adapt existing study regulations to the requirements of the European credit point system.
Cooperation across borders
The collaboration includes universities from nine different countries, which requires consideration of numerous educational legislations. This international networking not only creates new educational opportunities, but also promotes the sustainable development of the regions and strengthens the institutional structures. Thuringian partners such as LEG and the Baukultur Foundation are also invited to show their commitment, and Education Minister Christian Tischner is expected at the evening reception on March 11th.
This is also of particular importance Joint Programs which are increasingly being offered by universities in recent years. These enable students to diversify and deepen their academic experiences at multiple international higher education institutions. The advantage lies in the jointly developed curricula, which offer students a diverse insight into current scientific approaches.
Funding from the BMBF
Internationalization at German universities is being actively promoted by the federal and state governments. In the summer of 2024, an internationalization strategy was adopted that aims to increase the attractiveness and competitiveness of the German university location. This strategy also includes expanding high-quality experiences in an international environment, supporting student mobility and deepening European cooperation.
In 2023, 18,153 international collaborations between 312 universities in Germany were recorded. Initiatives such as the programs of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) promote structured student exchanges, research collaborations and the development of double degree programs.
By looking optimistically into the future, the Bauhaus University Weimar opens up new perspectives for students and scientists, with a focus on regionally specific needs and the challenges of a constantly changing education system in Europe.
