Thuringian Forest in focus: art, science and new perspectives!

On August 21, 2025, a remarkable exhibition will open in the Eiermannbau in Apolda that deals with the Thuringian Forest as an object of art and research. Under the title “Landscape in the Anthropocene: Thuringian Forest – between imagination, resources and reality”, the exhibition shows works by students from the faculties of architecture and urban studies as well as art and design at the Bauhaus University Weimar. These works were created as part of teaching and project formats of the professorships of landscape architecture and planning, design of media environments and art and cultural history. The exhibition illuminates the Thuringian Forest as a natural idyll and at the same time as a scene of ecological and social conflicts, dealing with central topics such as climate change, loss of biodiversity and demographic changes.

The opening of the exhibition will take place at 6:30 p.m., while a panel discussion will begin at 5 p.m. Experts from different disciplines will take part in the discussion. The panel participants include Prof. Erik Findeisen from the Erfurt University of Applied Sciences and Silke Franz from the Thuringian Ministry for the Environment, Energy and Nature Conservation. The moderation is taken over by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Sigrun Langner from the Bauhaus University Weimar. Admission to the event is free, but registration is requested baukultur-thueringen.de.

Sustainability and climate change in focus

The sustainable management of forests, as discussed in this exhibition, is becoming increasingly important in the context of climate change. Trees play a crucial role in photosynthesis, which converts CO2 into carbon. They not only help purify the air, but also act as climate protectors by storing carbon for years. Wood products obtained from these trees bind carbon and thus protect energy-intensive materials such as aluminum or plastic. ThüringenForst explains this to us in a detailed report that shows the ecological benefits of trees and wood products.

But not only the local situation in the Thuringian Forest, but also the challenges for European forests are the focus of the research. The SOSFOR project investigates how sustainable forestry can be implemented under changing environmental conditions and increasing pressure from use. Several universities from Italy, Romania, Spain, Norway and Germany are involved and are jointly developing options for action for forest managers and decision-makers. The focus is on preserving biological diversity and taking social demands into account in forest management, which is supported by the initiative waldfnr.de is supported.

As part of the upcoming Baukultur Festival, the exhibition and the subsequent panel discussion offer a platform to discuss the role of art, science and design in the transformation of the landscape. The interdisciplinary approach is intended to open up a new perspective on the complex interactions between nature and human activities and encourage the development of sustainable solutions in forestry.

Overall, the event promises to be both informative and inspiring, and the organizers invite all interested parties to take part in this cultural and scientific exchange.
