The Technical University of Ilmenau is taking a significant step in the academic landscape by launching a new degree program in “Data Science” in the winter semester of 2025/26. This innovative training is offered in a bilingual form (German-English), which is particularly beneficial for international students. The master's degree program, which starts in the summer semester of 2026, will be held entirely in English.

Students in the bachelor's program will acquire fundamental knowledge in mathematics, computer science and data analysis. The course has a particular focus on machine learning and data science techniques. From the first semester onwards, students should develop practical skills in dealing with data and take part in applied research projects. In this way, they should be integrated into international networks at an early stage, which can enrich their academic and professional careers.

Scientific and practical basics

The bachelor's degree program promotes comprehensive training in the first semesters. Topics such as software engineering, algorithms, statistics and stochastics are on the curriculum. Students are supported in developing programming skills in languages such as R, Java and Python as well as in using statistics programs such as SPSS. This knowledge is essential for today’s data landscape.

As the course progresses, students have the opportunity to specialize in modern technologies such as cloud computing. The curriculum also covers essential topics such as data visualization, IT security, data protection and the application of artificial intelligence. This not only increases the theoretical basic training, but also gives students the practical skills they need in the globalized job market.

International perspectives and double degree

A special feature of the new courses at TU Ilmenau is the possibility of a double degree. Students can obtain a degree from both the TU Ilmenau and the Lappeenranta University of Technology in Finland. This collaboration not only broadens academic perspectives, but also significantly improves career opportunities, especially among international companies looking for data science professionals.

With a standard period of study of 6 to 7 semesters and the option to choose different study models such as full-time, part-time or dual study, the course of study is variable and can be adapted to the individual needs of the students. Depending on the study model chosen, between 180 and 210 ECTS points can be achieved.

In order to prepare students for the high demand in the field of data science, emphasis is also placed on intercultural and ethical skills. The course content is designed to develop a holistic understanding of the complex challenges and opportunities in dealing with data.

Overall, with its new “Data Science” degree program, the Technical University of Ilmenau offers a forward-looking and comprehensive education that optimally prepares students for the requirements of a data-driven world. Given the advancing digitalization and the increasing importance of data analysis, the opportunities on the job market are extremely promising. Particular attention is paid to international perspectives that provide students with not only technical but also cultural skills.
