Future of Education: Symposium and Conference on Learning Space Design!

From September 24th to 26th, 2025, the Bauhaus University Weimar will host two important events that will focus intensively on the redesign of learning spaces. Both the Lernraum.Bauhaus symposium and the eTeach annual conference are organized under the common title “Spacing – Learning between Spaces”. These two events promise to open up new perspectives on the design of teaching and learning environments that combine both digital and physical dimensions. The deadline for submitting contributions is June 15, 2025.

The Lernraum.Bauhaus symposium will focus on the sensory and experiential dimensions of learning, highlighting aspects such as atmosphere, spatial aesthetics and didactic experiments. Submitted contributions will be presented in an accompanying exhibition that includes spatial narratives and visions. The aim is to promote the design of learning spaces that enable encounters, participation and creativity and are at the same time ecologically and socially sustainable.

Topics and formats

The eTeach annual conference, on the other hand, focuses on digitally supported change in learning and teaching spaces. Four central tracks are offered: Artificial intelligence in learning spaces, innovative examination formats, learning platforms and future skills. Contributors can submit their results as an impulse, workshop, topic island or poster.

The event is aimed at teachers, decision-makers in university management as well as those responsible for IT and infrastructure. A key concern is the promotion of interdisciplinary exchange and the development of competency-oriented, media-supported teaching-learning scenarios. Students are actively involved in the development process in order to incorporate their perspectives and ideas.

Diverse opportunities to participate

Participation in both events is free, regardless of whether you register for one or both events. Successful submissions will be recognized at the conferences and can serve as valuable inspiration for the future design of university learning spaces.

As part of these initiatives, an interdisciplinary ad-hoc working group was created that deals with sustainable learning space design. The aim of this group is to identify design dimensions for learning space development in the context of digital change, which is particularly important for decision-makers in the higher education sector. The results are intended to help develop practical implementation approaches for universities and formulate recommendations that support strategic decisions in university management.

Overall, these events concretize the committed research and development of innovative learning environments at the Bauhaus University Weimar. The University Forum for Digitalization highlights that challenges and opportunities in the education sector are discussed in order to design learning environments that support and inspire learners and teachers alike. The Project Learning Space.Bauhaus consistently pursues these goals with creative solutions and a clear focus on the needs of the university community.
