Digital teaching in Lower Saxony: 25 million euros for new initiatives!
The digital transformation of higher education in Lower Saxony is gaining momentum. All 20 state universities in the state have come together in the joint project “Digital Teaching Hub Lower Saxony” (DLHN) in order to strengthen the digitalization of teaching and improve strategic cooperation between the educational institutions. The total amount of funding under the “Universität.digital Niedersachsen funding line” is over 25 million euros MyNewsdesk reported.
The project includes a total of six sub-projects, which are funded by the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture. The University of Vechta is significantly involved, taking part in two of these sub-projects: “Cooperation of services in the area of digital teaching” and “Artificial intelligence in studies, teaching and examinations”. Univ.-Prof. Dr. Martin K.W. Schweer from the University of Vechta highlights the advantages that a common approach to digitalization brings.
Strategic framework and goals
The DLHN aims to make better use of the existing infrastructure and the synergy effects between the universities. Lower Saxony intends to significantly increase the effectiveness of digital technologies in studies, teaching, research and administration. This is supported by the integration of established digital infrastructures and organizations such as LANIT, ELAN e.V. and ZDIN, such as Digital University of Lower Saxony reported.
An overarching goal of the project is to build a nationwide hub that acts as an agile service and innovation platform for digital teaching in Lower Saxony. This project follows directly on from the previous project “Souver@nes Teaching and Learning in Lower Saxony”, which ran from 2021 to 2025. Part of the project will also be a series of events in the summer semester that will deal with the challenges of dealing with artificial intelligence and are specifically designed for teachers.
Collaboration across national borders
Against the background of digitization at universities, the “Cooperation of State Coordinations for the Digitization of Support Processes at Universities” (KoLa) was launched in Hamburg on August 1, 2024. The aim of this initiative is to intensify cooperation between different federal states and promote the exchange of experiences. Founding members come from 12 federal states, including Lower Saxony Digital University of Lower Saxony highlights.
While some federal states already have a long tradition of university cooperation, KoLa is now intended to help transfer state-related activities into cross-state cooperation. A particular focus is on identifying areas of action for cooperative services and service offerings.
The founding of KoLa and the DLHN are both about networking and strategically promoting synergies in order to advance digital transformation at universities in Lower Saxony and beyond. By 2029, the DLHN joint project is intended to offer support in many facets of digital teaching and thus pave the way for comprehensive digitalization of the educational landscape.
