Luka Herden takes bronze in the long jump at the FISU World University Games!

On July 25, 2025, the FISU World University Games athletics competitions were in full bloom. Luka Herden secured the bronze medal in the long jump and marked his achievement with a jump of 7.96 meters. He had already achieved this distance in qualifying. The competition took place on Thursday evening and was an exciting event for the spectators.

Gold and silver were awarded to two exceptional athletes. Koki Fujihara of Japan won with an impressive throw of 8.00 meters, while Shu Heng of China took top spot with 8.09 meters. Simon Batz from the IU International University and MTG Mannheim took part in the competition in the same discipline and took fourth place with 7.87 meters.

Klara Lukan impresses in the 10,000 meter run

Another highlight of the Games was the 10,000 meter run, in which Klara Lukan from Slovenia won the first gold medal of the FISU World University Games 2025. With her time of 31:25.84 minutes she set a new FISU record. The previous record, set in 1989, was held by Viorica Ghican of Romania and was 31:46.43 minutes. Lukan won the race by over 15 seconds over the other two medalists, Sarah Wanjiru Njeri from Kenya and Alicia Berzosa Martin from Spain.

After her win, Lukan was positive about the race and the support from the audience. This atmosphere in the renovated Lohrheidestadion, which has accommodated 16,500 spectators since it opened in 1954, underlined the special significance of the event.

Further competitions and qualifications

Joyce Oguama from TV Wattenscheid 01 was also active in the other competitions. She took fifth place in the discus throw final with a throw of 58.07 meters. Oguama had also previously achieved fifth place at the 2023 U23 European Championships in Espoo, Finland. Pia Schlattmann from the University of Münster and LG Brillux Münster also qualified for the 5,000 meter final, which will take place on Saturday at 8:50 p.m. in the Lohrheide Stadium, with a time of 16:34.23 minutes.

In addition, heats took place in other disciplines such as the 100-meter and 400-meter runs for men and women as well as the 400-meter hurdles for men. South Africa's Lythe Tyresse Pillay qualified for the semi-finals in his 400m heats and spoke of the energy and youthful vibe of the Games as providing him with valuable support.
