Sporty adventure: Students from the University of Vechta conquer the Lüneburg Heath!

As part of the excursion week for the sports science department at the University of Vechta, which took place on August 29, 2025, 25 students took part in a unique field of learning and experience. This excursion took place in the picturesque Lüneburg Heath and had the aim of acquiring individual teaching skills and sports motor demonstration skills in canoeing. The focus here was on a close integration of theoretical and practical content.

The theoretical units that preceded the excursion covered various aspects, including dealing with natural space, educational group leadership on the water and the physical properties of boat control. The students were accompanied by teachers from the University of Vechta in a self-catering camp, with Thorsten Schröer acting as the excursion leader. Provide additional information uni-due.de, which illuminate the bridges between theory and practice regarding physical education in different contexts.

Team spirit in focus

Unaffected by the adverse weather conditions, which this time included rain, the group's social structure was excellent. The students’ team spirit and sense of responsibility were remarkable. This shows that the excursion goes far beyond the purely physical. The participants should use the experience gained during the excursion for future water touring trips and can implement their organizational and methodological teaching skills.

Successful completion of this module “Excursion: On the Water” also enables students to obtain a subject-related qualification that enables them to teach. This shows how important practical experience is in teacher training. As part of the training, other modules are also offered that focus on the didactics of sport and address the planning and evaluation of school trips.

Enrollment in sports science

Those interested have until September 30th to enroll in sports science and other courses. The excursion and the acquisition of practical skills are an essential part of the training at the University of Vechta, as is the close cooperation with external partners, in this case Outdoorschmiede e.V., which contributed to the successful implementation of the excursion. How mynewsdesk.com reports, this practice-oriented approach is part of modern teaching methods in the subject area.

These excursions are important not only for the personal development of the students, but also for their future role as teachers in physical education, especially in extracurricular settings. Observations and learning experiences during such excursions create a valuable basis for teaching.
