Science celebration in Oldenburg: 22,000 euros for groundbreaking work!
On May 20, 2025, the OLB Foundation celebrated the renovated Old city treasury awarded the renowned OLB Science Prize in Oldenburg. Outstanding theses and dissertations from young scientists are honored with a total prize money of 22,000 euros. The aim is to raise public awareness of the importance of science funding.
At the award ceremony, Patrizia Bahrsch received from the University of Vechta a special honor for her master's thesis entitled “Herder's Poetry Concept: Linguistic Investigation”. Her work, conducted by Prof. Dr. Jochen A. Bär and Priv.-Doz. Dr. Matthias Attig supervised, illuminates Johann Gottfried Herder's understanding of poetry and its meanings. This high-quality work has already been honored with the Vechta University Society Prize.
Design and award
The award ceremony took place under the moderation of Karin Katerbau, member of the OLB Supervisory Board, and the CEO of the OLB Foundation, Britta Silchmüller. Professor Dr. Joachim Treusch, chairman of the independent jury, praised the outstanding quality of Bahrsch's research. This year a total of six prizes were awarded in various disciplines, including marine biology, medicine, economics and social sciences and psychology.
The award winners came not only from the University of Vechta, but also from the University of Oldenburg, the University of Osnabrück and the Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences. This illustrates the range of scientific excellence in the region of northwest Germany.
A long-term commitment to science
The OLB Science Prize has been awarded since the OLB Foundation was founded in 1994, which is dedicated to promoting science and research. Since its introduction, a total of around 300,000 euros have been awarded to more than 80 prize winners. The submitted works are assessed by an independent jury, which pays attention to the criteria of degree of innovation, practical relevance and social significance.
The OLB Foundation not only sees itself as a supporter of science, but is also involved in financing Germany scholarships for committed students. This commitment is underlined by the numerous applications from young scientists who compete for the award year after year.
