Digital art treasures: Baden-Württemberg in the focus of research!
On July 8, 2025, there will be exciting developments in digital art networking and traffic safety in Baden-Württemberg. These two topics show how innovative approaches are being promoted in both culture and public space.
An important project that focuses on promoting modern art is the digital “Art Showcase”. This project uses standardized digital formats and facilitates cross-regional exchange. According to the University of Stuttgart, it is doing pioneering work in digital work indexing and creating connection options to other databases. The showcase will serve as a model for future digital catalogs of works as well as offering a differentiated representation of art production in Baden-Württemberg. From December 2024, the sub-project “Art from 1933 to 1945 and after” will be added, which deals with art production during National Socialism and its aftermath. The aim is to make little-researched regional entanglements visible and to investigate them.
Digital parking control
In the area of traffic safety, Baden-Württemberg is now relying on innovative technologies. The new state mobility law enables the use of scanning vehicles to check parking spaces. The first pilot test will take place on the grounds of the University of Hohenheim. Transport Minister Winfried Hermann gave the starting signal for the first scanning vehicle, which is capable of checking up to 1,000 vehicles per hour. For comparison: only around 50 vehicles can be checked on foot.
The pilot phase, which will run for three months, aims to collect data on the performance and reliability of the system. During the test phase, a digital parking map will be created, followed by license plate matching to evaluate the efficiency of the new system. The data collected is not used to punish parking violations, which brings with it important data protection measures. License plate number, location and time are recorded, but deleted immediately if a parking permit is available. These measures are intended to ensure that citizens' privacy remains protected.
Cultural treasures in Baden-Württemberg
In parallel to these technological advances, the country also shows impressive diversity in the cultural sector. The collection in Baden-Württemberg includes valuable possessions of the dukes and kings, including the Army Museum and the State Trade Museum. Famous pieces on display in the Old Palace in Stuttgart include the royal crown from the Crown Treasury and exquisite treasures from the ducal art chamber.
The modern glass collection is one of the best in Europe, as are the magnificent clocks of the Renaissance and Swabian sculptures of the Middle Ages. These collections contribute to the regional and internationally oriented recording of art and culture in the region and expand the museum equipment of other buildings.
Overall, it shows that Baden-Württemberg is on a progressive path with its projects in both digital art and traffic safety. These are promising steps into the future, promoting both cultural and technical innovation and being made accessible to a wide audience.
