Flexible parking and e-charging: Stuttgart promotes carpooling!

On April 22, 2025, mobility in Stuttgart will be redesigned through innovative offers for carpooling. The University of Hohenheim is the central contact point for the “Stuttgart rides along” project, which provides numerous advantages for carpool users. Registered carpools can, among other things, park for free in the university parking lot and benefit from a 50 percent discount on charging current.

A special highlight is the 1 euro bonus for every passenger in the car. In addition, a spring challenge will be held until June 30, 2025, which will reward the five most active passengers with non-cash prizes. The aim of the initiative is to improve mobility to the university and the campus itself and to promote sustainable mobility. A total of over 100 free parking spaces are available for users of the “Stuttgart rides along” app.

Background of the project

The “Stuttgart goes along” project was launched in June 2023 and is supported by numerous partners, including the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport as well as the Marienhospital and the Stuttgart Clinic. This collaboration aims to connect people for carpooling while reducing stress and reducing climate-damaging emissions. The app offers a platform on which new carpools can be founded in a trusting environment.

The technical implementation and software development are carried out by the Munich company RideBee. In the second funding phase of the project, the focus is on continuous development of the app in order to establish it as a central ride-sharing app for the Stuttgart area. The platform also creates opportunities for fair cost compensation and offers exclusive parking spaces at selected locations.

Benefits and sustainability

Carpooling has numerous benefits beyond financial savings. According to that Federal Environment Agency Two cars with one person each use almost twice as much fuel as one car with two people. This makes it clear that carpooling not only reduces costs for those involved, but also significantly reduces fuel consumption and harmful emissions.

The state government supports such initiatives as part of its climate protection plan and the Green City Masterplan. Another advantage is the reversing guarantee, which offers users additional security. Employers can also support carpooling, for example through special matchmaking exchanges and discounts for employees. Information on insurance issues, particularly on motor vehicle liability for passengers, is also available on various internet platforms.

The possibilities for promoting mobility through carpooling are diverse and offer a sustainable solution to traffic problems in urban areas. The continuous development and the broad network of partners make “Stuttgart goes along” a promising step towards more environmentally friendly and economical mobility.
