Garden Lust in Heidelberg: Discover the big garden festival!
On Sunday, September 21, 2025, the Botanical Garden of Heidelberg University invites you to the garden party. The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the garden area at Neuenheimer Feld 340 in Heidelberg and is aimed at all citizens. The aim of the festival is to present the impressive diversity of botanical topics and current research work in plant research.
The event will be opened by René Bruse, the garden's technical director. He will provide information about the general renovation of the garden. This is a project that underlines the importance of preserving and maintaining botanical gardens. The botanical garden, one of the oldest in Germany, was founded in 1593 and has an eventful history, including destruction during the Thirty Years' War and multiple moves.
Informative and entertaining offers
A main highlight of the garden festival will be the large plant exchange, which particularly offers orchids, bromeliads and succulents. This is supervised by trainees and offers the opportunity to purchase valuable plants for your own home. For garden lovers and those interested, there are numerous themed tours and information stands on botanical topics. Gardening tips and tricks, such as repotting succulents and training young trees, are also offered.
An exciting supporting program is also planned. Among the speakers is Prof. Dr. Marcus Koch, who will talk about an international research project on designing biodiversity-friendly urban spaces. Prof. Dr. Thomas Greb will present the GreenRobust Cluster of Excellence. In addition, a “radioactive course” is taking place at the Institute for Environmental Physics, in which soil radioactivity is discussed.
Insights into science
The program includes a variety of lectures intended to give visitors an insight into current plant research. Martin Christophel will speak on the topic “Lux & Lumen was yesterday”, followed by Dr. Andreas Franzke, who will present the latest scientific news. Visitors can also look forward to a lecture on useful plants by Dipl.-Biol. Ursel Perino, as well as further contributions on various botanical topics, including an update on the Atacama project and the need for replanted species.
The event not only offers the opportunity to find out about botanical diversity, but also to actively participate in the discussion about current research trends. The garden festival is therefore an ideal opportunity for hobby gardeners and plant lovers to expand their knowledge and deepen their passion for botany.
The Botanical Garden of Heidelberg University has a total area of around three hectares of open space and 4,800 square meters of greenhouse space. Not only does it serve the public, but it is also an important place for scientific research and teaching at the university's Center for Organismal Studies.
