On October 2, 2025, Heidelberg University is preparing for the upcoming start of studies. On October 13, 2025, numerous new students will be welcomed as part of a celebratory “Welcome Day”. The event starts at 10:00 a.m. on University Square. University Rector Prof. Dr. Frauke Melchior will warmly welcome the first cohort of students.

The welcome ceremony will also include greetings from First Mayor Jürgen Odszuck, Prof. Dr. Perizat Daglioglu, the managing director of the Heidelberg Student Union, and the chairman of the student body are expected. In addition, the Collegium Musicum under the direction of Michael Sekulla will provide musical accompaniment during the event.

A colorful program

The greeting will be interpreted into German Sign Language (DGS) to ensure barrier-free communication. After the official speeches, an information exchange will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. There are 85 stands presenting various advice and service facilities as well as student initiatives.

The institutions represented include the Central Student Advisory Service, the heiSKILLS Competence and Language Center and the University Library. In addition, municipal institutions such as the theater and the Heidelberg Environmental Office are represented to give new students a comprehensive overview of what is available in the city.

Campus tours and AIDS service offers

During the event, campus tours through the old town take place every half hour. Anyone interested must register online. The tours offer an opportunity to get to know the campus and the surrounding area better.

Another highlight of the welcome day is the presence of the AIDS charity. This will provide information material on the topic of safe sex and distribute free materials such as condoms, lubricants and lick wipes. Information about Aidshilfe offers, workshops and events is also available. The recommendation is to first visit the Aidshilfe stand and take a bag with you so that you can collect the various giveaways.

With a varied program that includes both academic and social offerings, Heidelberg University would like to give new students a successful start to student life. The combination of information and entertainment is intended to help facilitate and accompany the first steps in the new study environment.
