Hohenheim starts service offensive for international master's students

On June 2, 2025, the University of Hohenheim launched the “BRICKS” service offensive, which is specifically dedicated to international master’s students. The program aims to promote these students' prospects of staying in Germany after completing their master's degree. Thanks to the support of the DAAD's FIT program, which is financed with around 1 million euros, various integration and qualification measures can be offered. More and more international students want to work in Germany after graduating.

BRICKS reaches around 180 international students every year in the fields of agricultural, food and economics. These students often struggle with the demands of the German labor market, especially when it comes to German language skills and job-specific skills.

Comprehensive support offer

The BRICKS program includes five components, each of which aims to develop key skills for the German labor market. This includes:

  • Deutschkenntnisse
  • Seminare zu Interkulturalität
  • Beschäftigungsfähigkeit
  • Future Skills
  • Bewerbungstechniken

By participating in these modules, the skills acquired can be recognized in a project-specific certificate. In addition, the International Café provides a contact point for questions and concerns from international students.

Another component of the program are “trade fair walks,” which lead to regional career fairs and company fairs on campus. Here students have the opportunity to make direct contacts with employers. Career coaching is individually tailored to the needs of the students in order to increase their chances on the German job market.

DAAD FIT program as a basis

The DAAD's FIT program supports universities in supporting international students on their qualification path in order to lead them to academic success and into a career in Germany. This program is financed by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and includes the expansion of career services for international students. By 2028, a total of 89 projects will be funded at various universities that focus on measures to prepare for studies, support and ensure success.

An example of the diverse activities provided under the FIT program comes from the Würzburg-Schweinfurt University of Technology. Among other things, a specific project to prepare for engineering studies is offered there in collaboration with Indian partners. The University of Applied Sciences and Arts also offers support in the initial phase of studies through language courses and psychosocial support.

In summary, it can be said that initiatives such as BRICKS and the DAAD's FIT program make an important contribution to the integration of international students into the German labor market. These projects aim to overcome not only academic but also professional hurdles and increase the chances of a successful career in Germany. The challenges associated with entering the professional world are systematically addressed.
