KIT celebrates advancement in the gender equality ranking of universities!

KIT has improved significantly compared to previous years and is now in fourth place with nine out of twelve possible points. In previous years, the institute was ranked in group six in 2023 and group eight in 2021. Ines Köhler, head of the Equal Opportunities and Diversity Management Department at KIT, was pleased with the progress that has been made in equality.

Evaluation criteria and methodology

The CEWS ranking evaluates universities based on six indicators that look at specific aspects of equality. KIT can particularly stand out in four categories:

  • Steigerung des Frauenanteils bei Professuren seit 2018

A particularly notable advance is the increase in the proportion of women in professorships, which rose from 14.6% in 2018 to 20% in 2023. This ranking is published every two years Center of Excellence Women and Science (CEWS) published and aims to compare the performance of universities in the area of ​​equality nationwide. The methodology for classifying universities into ranking groups was fundamentally revised.

Context of equality rankings

The CEWS university ranking is not the only one that deals with gender equality aspects. For example, there is this THE Impact Rankings, which has been publishing rankings on the UN Sustainable Development Goals since 2019, especially Goal 5 (gender equality). These rankings measure, among other things, research activities on gender issues as well as gender equality policies and the recruitment of women at universities.

The methodology of THE Impact Rankings includes six weighted individual indicators. This also includes measures to recruit female students and the proportion of women in management positions. In 2023, almost 1,100 universities were evaluated, with the Free University of Berlin coming in 76th place.

Overall, the various rankings reflect the increasing importance of equality and diversity in the higher education sector. In particular, the data and information that these rankings provide are crucial for continually improving the conditions for women in science.
