Minister of Education Schopper visits: Klösterleschule will be a showcase project!
On July 30, 2025, Minister of Education Theresa Schopper visited the Klösterleschule in Schwäbisch Gmünd to get an overview of the progress in language support and digital education. Accompanied by high summer temperatures, the children were welcomed with a welcome song by a multilingual student choir. This initiative is part of a broader program to promote future skills and integrate digital media into teaching.
A particularly remarkable collaboration between the Gmünd University of Education and the city enables the systematic use of tablets from the first grade onwards. Teacher Andrea Liebl demonstrated how these devices are used to strengthen students' language acquisition, reading skills and spelling. The integration of tablets extends not only to primary schools, but also to other classes and preschools.
Digital tools for teaching
The importance of digital media in the education sector is underlined by the expertise of Susanne Behrens, a language support specialist. She highlights how individual help can help improve children's language skills. Prof. Thomas Irion also emphasizes the sensible use of these technologies. As part of the school’s FluX.Lab, teachers work together on innovative approaches to language development.
Another important aspect is the CreatorSpace AG, which teaches students future skills such as the reflective use of artificial intelligence. Headmistress Margrit Carbon emphasizes the need to train children in how to move critically and creatively in the digital world. The fact that over 80% of the children at the Klösterleschule grow up multilingual is also addressed, which makes the integration strategies particularly relevant.
In addition, a recently published trend study entitled “AI@Education” shows some promising developments in the use of artificial intelligence in the education sector. The study looks at ways in which artificial intelligence can adapt to users' language skills. Applications such as Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) make it possible to analyze and adapt texts and dialogues individually, which is particularly advantageous for students with other languages of origin, as shown on deutsches-schulportal.de is explained.
Future prospects and support
The Klösterleschule aims to become a lighthouse project in the region. Initial cooperation discussions with city partners such as Eule, Theaterwerkstatt and District Media Center are already being discussed. The headmistress expressly calls for support from the ministry in order to be able to better meet the school challenges.
The first German tests at the school show positive results, which underlines the effectiveness of these measures. The Minister of Education would like this model to be implemented in other regions and is in favor of targeted support for schools with educationally disadvantaged families.
Overall, the visit of the Minister of Education and the associated initiative aims to establish the Klösterleschule as part of a larger vision for Schwäbisch Gmünd to become a “CreatorCity”. The use of digital media could make a decisive contribution to educational equality and reduce language barriers, as various studies show.
