Long Evening of Science: Discover the quantum world in Ulm!
On Friday, May 23, 2025, Ulm University will open its doors for the “Long Evening of Science” from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The event is a celebration for the entire family, students and those interested in science. Admission is free, which should enable broad participation. Guests can look forward to around 90 partly interactive hands-on activities, experiments, guided tours and lectures. This year the focus is on quantum science, which will be presented as part of QuantumNight to celebrate the quantum year 2025.
The event will take place in various areas of the university, including the training hospital and the botanical garden. There, the children can look forward to an exciting program with physics experiments for little researchers aged six and over and the lecture “From Schrödinger’s Cat to Quantum Technologies”. A competition on quantum technology research rounds off the offer, with the focus also on questions about battery and hydrogen research.
Diverse offers for those interested
In the training hospital, those interested can apply plaster casts and sew wounds under supervision. Registration on site is required for this. There is a special highlight for older children aged ten and over: the “LEGO Mindstorms Mars Mission”, which teaches engineering science in a playful way.
The Botanical Garden offers additional interactive opportunities to arouse curiosity with the “Selfie Treasure Hunt” and the “ChemEscape Room” for the lemon battery. Mathematics is not neglected either: insights into areas such as modeling, aerodynamics and control systems invite you to immerse yourself in the world of numbers.
The event takes place regardless of the weather. The Ulm Student Union provides meals, and only cashless payments are accepted. Weather permitting, the Botanical Gardens stay open until 9:30 p.m., allowing visitors additional time to explore.
A commitment to science
The Long Evening of Science is part of a comprehensive commitment to science communication, which is also in the context of the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology. The Max Planck Society, which is taking part in the celebrations of the 100-year history of quantum mechanics, will hold various events, lectures and workshops. These officially begin on February 4, 2025 in Paris and underline the importance of quantum mechanics, which is fundamental to modern technologies such as computers and smartphones.
The celebrations seek not only to promote interest in quantum physics, but also to make educational opportunities accessible to all age groups. Max Planck Institutes are planning numerous events for students that will bring the fundamentals of this fascinating science to life.
