Night of the Libraries: Discover exciting readings and workshops!
On Friday, April 4, 2025, the motto will be “Know. Share. Discover.” the first nationwide Night of Libraries took place. uni-ulm.de reports that more than 1,400 libraries in all 16 federal states are opening their doors to the public. The aim of the event is to invite citizens to get to know the diverse offerings of the libraries better.
The Neu-Ulm city library, the kiz library headquarters of the University of Ulm, the Ulm city library and the library of the Ulm University of Technology create a varied program. There are free events at all locations, ranging from readings and workshops to guided tours.
Variety of programs in Ulm and Neu-Ulm
The Ulm University of Technology will be open on April 4th from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Various events take place during opening hours. This includes a “hands-on demonstration” by the Repair Café from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. as well as several coffee lectures on topics such as “Norms in Nautos” and “Identifying disinformation,” which invite visitors to join in the discussion. A book flea market is planned from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. and library tours will be offered in English at 1 p.m. and in German at 5 p.m.
The Neu-Ulm city library opens from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and presents an exciting program that is suitable for all age groups. Offers include a library rally for children, a flashlight reading and a games evening for adults and children aged 12 and over. The happy hour from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. allows visitors to receive a free 3-month trial pass.
Lectures and special offers
At the kiz library headquarters at Ulm University, the focus is on the topic of media literacy. Several lectures take place here in the training room. Charis Brem will provide information about identifying fake news from 4:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Dr. Jonas Mirbeth will provide insights into the use of AI in theses from 4:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Prof. Dr. Steffen Wenzel and Uli Hahn present their own topics and thus offer visitors a platform for discussion.
The Ulm City Library, which impresses with its impressive glass pyramid architecture, invites you to guided tours that take place at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. and last around 90 minutes. However, the tours are only accessible after prior registration.
National participation
According to information from dnb.de Important institutions such as the German National Library in Leipzig and Frankfurt am Main also take part in the nationwide Night of Libraries. Guests in Leipzig have the opportunity to take part in comprehensive guided tours and take a look behind the scenes of Germany's largest library, where over 53 million media are stored. In Frankfurt, visitors can explore, among other things, the exile archive.
Overall, the Night of the Libraries offers an excellent opportunity to discover and use the important cultural institutional resources in Germany. In addition, it is considered part of the current discussions about the role of digitization in library work.
