New campus in Schwäbisch Gmünd: The future of care begins here!

A new campus of the Schwäbisch Gmünd University of Education (PH) is taking shape. A modern building is to be built in Oberbettringen, which will stand directly next to the cafeteria. This project, whose groundbreaking ceremony was celebrated over the weekend, contains numerous innovative features that will benefit students and society.

A student house with various amenities will be built on the ground floor. This includes an AStA, the student café Matrikü(h)l as well as baby changing rooms and workstations for students. The first floor will house the Creative Hall Assisted Living (CHAL), which includes a skills lab, a digital lab and a mechanical lab. A multifunctional room will also be set up here, which offers a variety of possible uses.

Interdisciplinary approaches to quality of life in old age

The top two floors are reserved for the Institute of Nursing Science, which includes group work and consultation rooms as well as a quiet room. This new facility is part of a comprehensive project supported by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). The total investment of 7.5 million euros includes grants of 600,000 euros each from the Ostalbkreis and the city of Schwäbisch Gmünd. In 2019, the IGO received a funding commitment of 750,000 euros from the ERDF.

The CHAL will combine the strengths of the PH Schwäbisch Gmünd, the Aalen University and the Schwäbisch Gmünd University of Design. The aim is to promote innovative ideas in the context of an aging society and to develop digital solutions that can improve the quality of life in old age. A particular focus is on digital assistance systems that are to be researched in nursing science. The institute will train experts who are responsible for complex home care.

Sustainability and modern architecture

The new building will be constructed in passive house quality and complies with the silver rating system for sustainable building (BNB). It is designed as a 3-story wooden structure, barrier-free and equipped with a partial basement. The heat supply should be ensured independently by a heat pump. Mayor Richard Arnold emphasized the importance of this connection between university and research as a step towards improving the quality of life of citizens.

The Creative Hall offers space for interdisciplinary collaboration between science, society and business to overcome the challenges of aging. The institution acts as an innovation driver in research on AI and its application in care, as current studies show. These make it clear that digital assistance systems are becoming increasingly important in industry and services. They not only offer support, but also have a positive effect on humanizing the world of work.

Overall, this new campus will not only expand the offerings for students, but also provide a platform for developing solutions that address demographic change and the associated challenges. The construction is expected to be completed by the end of September next year and could serve as a guide for similar projects.
