Schlosslichtspiele 2025: Art meets science in Karlsruhe!

From August 14th to September 14th, 2025, Karlsruhe will become a stage for art and science. On the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), the lighting technology festival Schlosslichtspiele transforms the baroque palace facade into an impressive projection surface. The main theme this year is “The Shining Lights of Science,” a tribute to the university’s achievements and the diversity of its research fields.

The castle light shows attract over 2.5 million visitors every year. This year's event presents a variety of creative contributions, including the ten-minute short film "Science for Impact", made by the Spanish artist group Los Romeras. This film transforms the castle facade into different scenarios, including a jungle and a futuristic city. Professor Thomas Hirth, Vice President of KIT, emphasizes the importance of presenting research that can be experienced through art.

Artistic diversity and interactive offers

In total, this year's show includes 100 applications from 20 nations. Six notable contributions are:

  • Benjamin Jantzen mit „Le taxi pour l’avenir heureux“, der die 17 Nachhaltigkeitsziele der UN thematisiert.
  • Ari Dykier präsentiert „Reflexion in Technik“, welches historische Medientechnik mit digitaler Ästhetik verknüpft.
  • SGK+ zeigt „The Tao. The Flow of the Universe“, das wissenschaftsphilosophische Fragen mit taoistischer Bildsprache verbindet.

In addition, the ZKM Summer School will offer 15 international young artists the opportunity to develop their own works that complement the festival. On Anti-War Day, the “OneVoice” project will be presented, which uses music as a bridge between cultures.

The importance of the festival for Karlsruhe

The Schlosslichtspiele are celebrating their tenth anniversary this year and represent a significant cultural contribution to the city of Karlsruhe. Dr. Kirsten Hennrich, the managing director of the KIT Center for Climate and Environment, coordinates KIT's film contribution and adds that the projection art creatively uses the 170 meter long and 17 meter high castle facade to visualize topics such as energy, climate, health and mobility.

Access to all events is free, which enables broad participation in this unique combination of art and science. Viewers are invited to experience the city's lived creativity and the achievements of KIT research up close. The Schlosslichtspiele 2025 are more than just a light festival - they are an experience that encourages discussion of current topics and further establishes Karlsruhe as a city of media art.

The opening event on August 14, 2025 for invited guests will begin at 6:00 p.m. and will include contributions from Professor Hirth, Mayor Albert Käuflein and Alistair Hudson from the ZKM. The event provides an impressive start to a month full of innovative art and science.
