University of Freiburg and Fraunhofer: New era of sustainability begins!
The University of Freiburg today announced the start of construction on the new Sustainability Engineering Center (IZN). In collaboration with the Fraunhofer Institutes, this project aims to redesign the entire process from basic research to practical application. A clear focus is on the development of sustainable technical systems as part of the research focus “Paths to Sustainability”. uni-freiburg.de reports.
The IZN will comprise a three-story building with an area of approximately 2,700 square meters. The facility should not only offer an excellent technical infrastructure, but also present a modern working environment and sustainable architecture. The construction costs amount to around 36 million euros, which are financed by the Fraunhofer Society and the state of Baden-Württemberg. The client is the Fraunhofer Society itself.
Scientific excellence
Seven professors from the University of Freiburg and the Fraunhofer Society will work at the IZN. Its goal is to develop technical innovations that contribute to achieving international sustainability goals. The planned innovations include:

Another aspect of research at INATECH is the active partnership with a wide range of actors from the private and public sectors. This collaboration is particularly important to enable interdisciplinary research projects. The Institute for Sustainable Technical Systems (INATECH) is dedicated to researching engineering solutions that take into account both current requirements and the needs of future generations. Innovative approaches and examples
The unique structure of INATECH, which functions as a partnership between the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg and five Freiburg Fraunhofer Institutes, covers the entire research range from basic research to industrial applications. This highlights Freiburg as an important research location and illustrates the innovative strength of the region. An example of an alternative Fraunhofer innovation is the development of white LEDs, which not only reduced CO2 emissions but also created jobs.
