University of Konstanz: Germany’s pioneer in sustainability!
The University of Konstanz has once again distinguished itself as one of the leading universities in the area of sustainability. According to the current evaluation of the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Ranking 2025 The university takes first place in Germany in the category “Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions” (SDG 16) and second place in the category “Reduced Inequality” (SDG 10).
Worldwide, the University of Konstanz is in the top ten percent in these two categories, with place 92 out of 1,214 in category 16 and place 101-200 out of 1,261 in category 10. Rector Katharina Holzinger emphasizes the importance of the Cluster of Excellence “The Politics of Inequality”, which contributed significantly to these top rankings. The annual comparison has been carried out since 2019 and measures the effectiveness of universities in relation to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations.
Successes in the overall ranking
Overall, the University of Konstanz took part in the 2025 ranking in nine categories. The overall ranking is based on the four strongest categories: SDG 10, SDG 14 (Life Below Water), SDG 16 and SDG 17 (Partnerships to Achieve the Goals). In the national comparison, the university achieved fourth place out of ten participating universities and in the international ranking the ranking range was 301-400 out of 2,318 institutions.
The ranking of International cooperation shows that more than 2,152 universities from 125 countries took part, an increase of 561 more than last year. This highlights the growing global focus on sustainability in higher education.
Focus on sustainability goals
The University of Konstanz is heavily involved in a variety of categories. The categories SDG 10, 14, 16 and 17 were included in the overall ranking. In addition to the two outstanding placements, the University of Konstanz also achieved placements among the top 25 percent in the categories “High-quality education” (SDG 4), “Gender equality” (SDG 5), “Climate protection measures” (SDG 13) and “Life on land” (SDG 15).
In the 2022 rating, the university ranked 66th out of 521 in the area of “Life on Land” and 15th out of 809 skin schools in the area of “Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.” This reflects the university's research strengths in the areas of law, international relations and policy advice. Public events and teaching programs on ecology and climate protection are also offered.
