Water crisis on Lake Constance: Experts sound the alarm at the conference!

On April 24, 2025, the conference “Water in Transition” took place in the Konstanz Science Forum, which dealt intensively with global water scarcity and its far-reaching consequences. Loud Campus University of Konstanz The water level of Lake Constance was recorded at an alarmingly low level at this time. The event included numerous experts who provided information and discussions about various aspects of the water problem.

In his opening lecture, Klement Tockner, Director General of the Senckenberg Society for Natural Research, pointed out ten global risks that are directly linked to climate change, including extreme weather events and the loss of biodiversity. Tockner called for a rethink in the use of water and called for an increased switch to reusable bottles, as he explained using the example of Rwanda, where a plastic ban was successfully implemented.

Research and challenges on Lake Constance

The conference aimed not only to inform, but also to contribute to in-depth education. David Schleheck from the University of Konstanz presented current research results on microalgae, bacteria and water quality at Lake Constance. The circumstances were challenging because inspecting the research vessels was complicated due to the low water level of the lake.

Karsten Rinke from the Helmholtz Center pointed to the disappearance of lakes worldwide, especially in dry regions, while Kerstin Stahl from the University of Freiburg discussed the increase in drought periods as a result of climate change. Stahl emphasized the need to create water storage to counter increasing drought.

Usage conflicts and solutions

Another central topic of the conference was the analysis of usage conflicts surrounding water in Germany. Martina Flörke from the Ruhr University Bochum informed about the fact that 75% of water use conflicts concern the quantity of surface and groundwater. These conflicts reinforce the urgency for better water management and sustainable practices.

Loud Federal Environment Agency The water shortage in Germany has complex causes, including climatic changes, water quality problems and increasing water withdrawals, especially in agricultural areas and metropolitan regions. The tense situation requires region-specific measures, such as the implementation of long-distance water pipeline systems to prevent water shortages.

In order to counteract the impending water shortage, the WADKlim research project presented several possible solutions. Recommended strategies include improving water retention, promoting water efficiency, and site-adapted water reuse. These measures should be integrated into the decision-making processes of political actors and stakeholders to ensure fair water distribution.

The event, which was part of the forum.konstanz ideas competition and the excellence strategy, was recognized in her remarks by patron Petra Olschowski, who praised the scientific excellence of the contributions. The conference created an important space for exchange between science and the public and highlighted the urgent need to develop effective solutions to address the water crisis.
