Future for Ukrainian students: Integration and education in Germany!

Amid the challenges that Ukraine is experiencing due to the ongoing conflict, Germany is sending a signal of solidarity and support for refugee students. The Program “Future Ukraine – Scholarship program for refugees from Ukraine at German universities”, initiated by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), is a pioneering example of these efforts. The aim is to help refugee Ukrainian students complete their studies in Germany and thus make a contribution to their home country. The program runs from January 2023 to the end of July 2025 and has already supported 17 students at the University of Konstanz.

The financial support from this program amounts to over 380,000 euros. This enables the supported students not only to integrate into full-time studies, but also to have access to special language courses and orientation phases. The students come from different disciplines and their individual support is provided by the project coordinator Agnieszka Vojta, who works closely with the participants.

Intercultural exchange and volunteer work

A central element of the program is the promotion of intercultural exchange and solidarity on campus. The aim is to build networks between students, teachers and supporters in order to create connections that last beyond the duration of the program. Many scholarship holders also volunteer in Germany, be it through tutoring projects or legal advice.

Viktoriia, a scholarship holder from Ukraine, shares her belief that many students will return after graduating in Germany to actively participate in the reconstruction of Ukraine. The knowledge and skills acquired abroad are considered extremely valuable. Agnieszka Vojta emphasizes the social responsibility that comes with education and sees it as a key factor for stability and peace in the region.

Long-term prospects for refugee academics

The scholarship program is not only seen as short-term help, but also aims to establish long-term training prospects for refugee academics. Study and research stays support students, graduates and doctoral students from Ukraine so that they can acquire a degree at a German university or adapt their Ukrainian degree after a stay in Germany. Scholarships, specialist language courses and various support events are also available to make integration easier for refugee students.

The program is an initiative that shows how education can be used as a tool to support and improve the living conditions of affected students. It represents not only help, but also an investment in the future of Ukraine.

The DAAD also supports all students who have had refugee experience, regardless of their field of study. The monthly funding can be up to 812 euros, plus a flat rate tuition fee of 300 euros. It is important for applicants to meet certain academic requirements, such as a place at a state or state-recognized German university.

Creating such sustainable training paths not only helps refugee students, but also paves the way for bringing skilled workers who are urgently needed back to Ukraine.
