Education for All: New research program on integration started!
With the “Integration through Education” program, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is setting new standards to improve educational opportunities for people with a migration background, especially girls and women. This extensive research project, which was initiated in late autumn 2024, aims to generate successful conditions for integration and participation through education. The program supports a total of 20 cooperative projects from science and practice that pursue interdisciplinary and practice-oriented approaches to analyze the challenges in the education system and develop solutions.
The “Metaproject Migration, Integration and Participation in Education” (MetaIntBil) project will receive significant support of around 1.5 million euros. Responsible for this initiative are, among others, Prof. Dr. Stephan Kröner and Dr. Lisa Birnbaum from the Friedrich Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU). The central goal of the meta-project is to network the scientists and bundle their results in order to anchor them in both the national and international state of research. FAU reports that The partners in the meta-project are the University of Bamberg, the University of Hamburg and the GmbH Bildungs & Begabung.
Research priorities
A special feature of the project is the focus on research syntheses, which aim to provide a comprehensive overview of international research on integration through education. The methodology includes a broad database search for relevant articles. Through a subsequent priority screening, the most important works are identified in order to then publish the results in international peer-reviewed journals. Empirical educational research reports that From 2025, interim results will be presented through research sprints in order to actively communicate the findings to the specialist public.
Another aspect of the program is the active participation of organizations that represent directly affected people and the need for dialogue between science and practice. This commitment is intended to help promote a diversity-sensitive education system and to counteract the specific educational barriers that exist, particularly for girls and women with a migration background. Despite better school performance compared to boys, these girls are often disadvantaged in the transition to training and study.
Integration into educational practice
The BMBF attaches particular importance to the involvement of educational stakeholders in research projects. In this context, the GmbH Bildungs & Begabung has assumed responsibility for science communication and transfer. All results of the program will be made publicly available in compliance with data protection regulations and without paywalls in order to promote the principles of Open Science. The program is supported by the European Social Fund (ESF Plus) and national federal funds in order to sustainably increase educational opportunities for people with a migration background. More information show that women in particular, especially mothers, play a key role in the integration processes and the educational careers of their children.
